Weird device attached to keyfob.

Hello. We recently bought an 08 mdx and brought it in to have dents removed and a key replaced. They gave us a 2016 mdx loaner, but it has a weird black thing with a small battery attached to it. I'm thinking it's a tracker, but I'm not sure. Anyone know what it is?

I don't know for sure, but it looks similar to the "SpeedPass" from Esso.

See https://www.speedpass.ca/
Check the images halfway and bottom of the page

It could also be used in the key managing system of the dealership. The salesman logs a key out under his own name whenever he takes a customer for a test drive.

This is just from the key machine that stores the keys at the dealer.

There are many different systems, and this one is magnetic, so keep track of the keys by stock #, etc.

Someone simply didn't take it off that key before making it a loaner vehicle and lending it out. Doesn't do anything other than keep track of the key in a machine at the dealer.

^^ Yep, the computer checks the key out to a person at the dealership so someone is responsible for the whereabouts.
