The Prodigal Son returns to Acura!!
Hello All -
I just purchased a 2015 Acura MDX SH-AWD with Tech package (black on black) a couple days ago and i must say i'm happy to be back with Acura. I leased a brand new TL back in 04. Then traded that in a few years later for an 05 RL. Then i had an 06 MDX. I've had a Trailblazer SS for the last 10 years and unfortunately had to part ways with it and there wasn't another SUV i'd like to have other than the MDX.
I'm excited to be back in an Acura and i'm enjoying the MDX tremendously. Drives so good and i've always said Acura is the most bang for the buck. It came with the all weather mats which was great. Plan on getting the front windows tinted along with the front windshield. I've already ordered the splash guards and a moonroof visor. I think that should do it for now. Any advice you guys can share or any other suggestions on accessories, let me know. Thanks!

1. Review all applicable recalls/bulletins here:

2. Make sure that all maintenance is up to date. If any doubt, do it to make sure.

yes recalls have been checked. And I plan on getting an oil change this week just to be sure. Thanks!
I do have a concern.. which gas should I put in the MDX? does anyone put regular?

look into how your transmission is shifting and possibly get a last flush and programing done by the dealer before the CPO is over if you purchased a CPO. looks like the trans fluid flush is gonna be a regular maintenance item for these MDXs. second is a personal opinion, I'd like to see how you like the MDX with the front tire pressure 38PSI and rear 41 PSI. it will really firm up the ride from the side to side squat on faster turns.

The engine will adjust for lower than 91 octane, but performance and MPG will drop. I often tow with mine, so I always use 91 or better.

So if i'm not towing and just regular driving here and there is it ok to use a lower grade? Or are you still saying that it'll effect MPG and performance even if it's just regular driving?

Power and MPG will be affected in regular driving, though may not be as obvious. Try driving for at least 500 miles on premium so that you get used to the vehicle, then try a tank of regular and see if you notice the difference.

I wonder if it was regular used prior to me getting the vehicle? I’ve noticed around 37-40 mph when maintaining that speed the transmission would stutter a bit. Kinda jump/lag or something. Has anyone had experience with this? Not sure I’m explaining it properly but hopefully u get the idea lol

Acura, like all other manufacturers, has used some extreme technology in an attempt to meet ever-tougher EPA requirements for MPG. By extreme I mean engineering decisions that favor better MPG, at the expense of a better driving experience.
1. VCM, which cuts out 3 of the 6 cylinders at lower engine loads, creates quite a bit of vibration and noise. Very obvious at steady cruise around 30 to 40 MPH in my X.
2. The transmission shifts too quickly into higher gears under the same conditions, so even without the VCM the engine lugs and vibrates. The combination of both systems drives me crazy.
When I am stuck in that 30 to 40 MPH speed range, I select "S" mode to lock in either 3rd or 4th gear. That makes for a much smoother experience. I suggest you try it just to confirm that the above scenario is what you notice.
As Shenofjo mentioned already, the 6 speed transmission is quite sensitive to fluid changes. A simple drain and fill (Acura says not to use a flushing system) is a very easy DIY operation. Always use only Honda/Acura DW-1 fluid. A 4 pack is under $35 from Amazon. If you prefer not to do it yourself you should be able to negotiate a labor-only price (You supply the fluid) with an independent garage. If combined with an engine oil and filter change (where the vehicle is already up on a lift) it adds about 20 minutes of time to drain and fill the transmission.
