Mechanical Protection Programmes? aka Extended Warranty

Hey peeps,

I'm in the process (delivery is Friday) of buying a 2014 MDX Advance and have been given an option of buying a 6/yr 100k mi "Platinum" New Vehicle Service Agreement warranty for $3440.

Did any one else buy an extended warranty for their 2014 MDX?

Here is a link to the warranty company: www.mpp.com

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I guess you never heard from anyone. I took delivery today of my '14 MDX AWD w/tech. Financed a portion thru our credit union and they had an extended warranty 96 months/100k miles, Rt 66 Easy Street. I have 30 days to cancel and was hoping to hear from others hear if they picked it up. Concerned about new model year with new factory glitches.... Anyone? This one was $1600.

Waste of money. The car has a 6 year full powertrain warranty, what would be the use?

I will likely mileage out and not time out of the manufacturer's warranties. Admittedly I am only buying for the later years, but that contradicts my original reasoning ("1st" gen kinks). I will sleep on it. Thanks.

I think the best ext warranty for Acura is Acura Care.
And I believe it is under 2000 for 8y/100K mi.

I got a 7 year 70k extended for $1700 with the guarantee that if I don't use it I get the money back (by the years, not the miles).

Again, a total ripoff the car comes with a 7 year 70K mile drivetrain warranty. That warranty includes all items of any significant cost that may break in that period; engine, transmission, suspension, transaxles, etc. The chances that a repair for any nondrivetrain item during that 3 year period will cost you anywhere near to 1700 bucks is essentially zero. You just paid 1700 bucks in case a door doesnt open or if the AC needed a new evaporator after 4 years.

Acura Care Warranty for $2K

You can get Acura Care warranty for 8 yr/120K for 2000.

The reason I purchased for my Acura Advance, was that the following things went wrong in my 2004 Acura MDX between Years 4 and 8. Driver's Seat heating, rear fan blower, air vent clips, passenger side mirror - curb view, and a couple of other items. You can live with some of them, but getting a warranty takes the thinking about it.

Just buy Acuracare if you need an extended service agreement (that's what they call extended warranty). Look up Bob Leab at Hyannis Honda. He usually offers the best price in my experience. If you decide to get one, get a plan that counts, e.g. 6yrs/120K or 7yrs/120K, like RL06Tech mentioned. Acura will refund any unused part of the warranty if you decide to cancel later, given you didn't finance the Acuracare with the car. In that case, the bank will get the refund unless you can provide proof that it's paid off.

I would only buy the Acura Factory Warranty. In Canada, you can buy the factory warranty anytime while the original warranty is valid. In Canada, this is 4 years. I would wait until your 4 years is almost up. At that time, you can decide if you want to keep the vehicle. If you decide to keep it in year 4, then you buy the extended warranty.

Stay away from 3rd party warranties. I had one before. You have to get their permission before the dealer can start work and some companies specialize in denying your claim.
