MDX towing question (SH-AWD vs Sport Hybrid)

I'm looking at getting an MDX SH-AWD or a Sport Hybrid (if I can find one). I notice that the towing capacity on both is 5000lbs. I intend to use the car to occasionally tow a bay boat (boat is about 1800lbs and the trailer is about 1000lbs), so I should be well under the max weight. My question relates to whether the hybrid has any differences I should know about as far as towing is concerned, or is it all the same?

Even if listed at 5000lbs. capacity on the hybrid, towing is not recommended. Lots of discussion about this throughout this forum. Even to the point that folks with hybrids even question whether they can install bike racks. Just one of many threads linked below.

Thanks. Makes my decision much easier. Can I assume that the sh-awd mdx has no issues with towing?

The MDX in FWD and sh-awd is rated for 3500lbs. You have to add the transmission cooler kit to get the full 5000lbs for the sh-awd. Best you can do with the MDX hybrid is add a hitch for a bike rack or hitch mounted cargo carrier because of the 7DCT isn't made for towing. It might be an extra +$2000 depending if you DYI or dealer install the hitch, harness, trans cooler, and upgrade to full size spare.

I'm a bit confused. According to this article (https://www.boardwalkacura.com/acura...egg-harbor-nj/) the SH-AWD MDX comes with an automatic transmission cooler. Are you saying I need an additional cooler?

The article you listed above is a little misleading because you need to add the OEM hitch+separate OEM transcooler for additional 9AT cooling to move above the 35000 lbs limit to get the full 5000lbs of towing. The article reads like you get the hitch+transcooler just by selecting sh-awd (you only get the donut spare tire kit with sh-awd). The 2nd Gen 07-13 MDX was ready for 5000lbs of towing with just the OEM hitch.

Just be aware that there tranny cooler has a known issue that creates a "clunk" at the first dog clutch engagement in the ZF9 tranny. It won't hurt it, but it drove me insane. Acura knows about this issue as they removed the cooler and refunded me for the upgrade including labor. My boat is only 2500lbs, so I was able to do this. I would ask them about this issue before installing the cooler.
