LED Headlight Lens UV Protection

Hi everyone,

We picked up an off-lease 2018 Base with 24,000 miles for a great price yesterday. I'm already planning on doing a light paint correction and putting a ceramic coat on the paint. Does anyone have any experience or opinions about UV protection for the headlight lenses? I'm sure with LEDs they aren't getting baked from both sides like halogens, but they're currently like new and I want to keep them that way.

Thanks for the input.

I did PPF that has UV protection for my 19 MDX and 18 RLX. There is a 14 or 15 MDX around the corner from my house that is parked outside 24/7/365 with UV hazing on the LED headlights. I live in the southwest with probably +300 days of direct sunlight. Probably not as big as an issue if your MDX is under covered parking, garage kept, or you get more cloudy days or filtered sunlight. Did the same PPF on my 06 TSX, 08 RDX, and 11 MDX with crystal clear HIDs lens with the film.

always garage your vehicle and keep it out of the sun.
if that is not possible at work, your next best line of defense would be to apply some sort of UV blocker on the headlight.

it's the UV rays that destroy clear coats. Cover the car at all times or keep some sort of UV blocking product on the clear coats..
you could ceramic coat the lenses and then follow up with a man made sealant of your choice.

that way you have the factory sealant/clear coat covered in a ceramic coating coated with a man made wax like 4starUltimatePaintProtection

I’ll definitely put some ceramic coat on the headlight/taillights and do the same for the paint. I live in a 200 year old house in a 200 year old neighborhood, I don’t have a garage!

Thanks!

First thing I did for my 2018 Hybrid was PPF my headlights and the top side of my rear bumper. So far no yellowing and its a 10 year warranty on the film.

I do regret not doing my front bumper though. I drive a lot of hwy miles and already have 2-3 small rock chips. At the time I lost my job a few months after purchasing the car and didn't have the funds to do the bumper.

A good wax will protect the headlights from the UV rays. In addition, a PPF (clear or slightly tinted) will protect the headlights from rock chips.

I use multiple coats of a ceramic coating on the lights. My whole MDX is ceramic coated with 2 coats but I think I put 3 or 4 coats on the lights. I will reapply every year too. Being in Arizona, UV protection is an absolute MUST.

I've not been a fan of putting PPF on lights just as a personal preference. Most legit ceramic coatings have decent UV protection.
