2020 MDX w/rod bearing problem

I did a Seach on this, there is a lot there and I didn't go through all the posts but I didn't see anything that would relate to a couple of points:

Does anyone know anything about cars with the rod bearing problem but not on the recall list?

Also, what is Acura approving for the fix, new engine or replace the bearings, crank, both?

Thanks,
Jim

I think the recall is way more widespread as far as how many vehicles are affected. I believe the recall will be expanded. But I also do not believe Honda knows exactly how many vehicles are affected nore what ones they think are affected are really affected.

I have a 2020 MDX and a 2016 MDX, the 20 got the recall the 16 did not. The 16 has 225000 miles I'm not worried about it. The 20 had ~40000 when we had the recall performed. I have been a professional engine builder for over 35 years so needless to say I was very apprehensive about this as I know that if you assemble an engine with not enough bearing clearance the results are catastrophic and if it doesn't catastrophically fail and there is enough damage to merit the bearings needing to be replaced the crankshaft will more than likely be damaged and need to be replaced. So, off the MDX went to the dealer. I asked that the parts be returned to me and was told that wouldn't happen as they are proprietary parts witch is BS because you can buy the parts free trade and besides, I own the vehicle as well as the parts within. It was worked out that I would get to see the parts was the best I was going to do. I maintain my vehicles very well; oil changed every 3000 miles with Mobile One full synthetic 0W-20. The bearings that came out look very good, no scoring across the surface. There was a little edge loading but nothing that I would have said it looked bad. All went back together and no issues so far. The car does get slightly better fuel milage and maybe the power is slightly better. The 20 MDX has always gotten worse fuel milage and not as good of power delivery as the 16 MDX. Very strange and disappointing as you would naturally assume that a newer model of the same generation would be the same if not better on both. Also, my mom has a 201 TLX that has been recalled for the rod bearings. It has ~100000 miles. I think it's fine and I told her I wouldn't have it done as having some line monkey rooting around in your engine is never good. I had several issues with a couple of miner items; Oil drain Plug sealing washer was not replaced and was so overtightened that it was massively deformed and leaking after I got it home (I drove it home and immediately drained the oil and replaced the oil filter). The oil filter was massively over tightened and the right front wheel that had to be removed to perform the recall was so tight could barely get it off with a 1/2" impact. Bottom line is if you maintain your vehicle well and have a good number of miles on it, I would not worry about having the recall done.

I have attached the actual recall procedure from Honda, there are several "inspections" that lead to different items being replaced. The minimum is that the rod bearings are replaced. All the way up to the long block being replaced. Main bearings could also be bad and need replacing as well. I will let you read the procedure.

I have read the Service Bulletin and found it very enlightening.

Thanks for all that information, much appreciated. My car is at the dealer now and it is not going well. I don't want to put all the gory details on this public forum because you never know who might be watching. I know that sounds paranoid but these days...who knows? But if I might ask a favor, can I PM you and give you a little more detail about my situation?

Jim
