2017 MDX w/ Tech package PROBLEMS
Hi all,
I purchased a 2017 certified MDX. Clean carfax, was always maintained at the Acura dealer, no accidents, etc. please let me know your thoughts on my problems below
My father has a 04 that has been extremely reliable and thought the same of the 2017.
1. Extremely rough jerks from 1000-2000 RPM. The Acura dealer we’ve been going to for 13 years says it’s normal. I found TSB 20-015. Going to another dealer tomorrow. Any advice?
2. I hear a loud POPPING noise when I reverse back into my drive way. Intermittently. Initial Acura dealer again says “normal”.
3. Annoying rattle from second row seats - unknown what it can be. I believe the seat frame?
4. The first service is supposedly covered under the CPO, but NONE of the dealers seem to have any idea about this...?

Our '17 CPO would jerk from 1-2 gear, brought it in for B1 service almost 2 weeks ago. They reset the learning on the transmission and updated the software on it too. It's only been 85kms since but so far so good. He said it would take about 800kms for it re-learn. In covid times this will take us forever as we put 8k kms on the vehicle in 1 yr. On your #2, ours would make a clunk when reversing out of the driveway and go over the little bump at the end. They too dais it was normal and told me there is more play in the brake spacing to help with expansion due to heat, they were able to remedy this a bit by bending something a little bit.
I concur with having the TSB done on the transmission - will likely help out a lot. When you get to the 40-50k mile mark they recommend a transmission fluid replacement on the 9-speed - which may not help your problem but good maintenance to consider.
In terms of the second row rattle, there's an issue with a lot of '17's with seat rails that aren't properly tightened to the floor. In my case the dealer loosened all bolts then retorqued them, and my problem went away. I had an earlier issue with my (then) '17 with a real rattle in the 2nd row seat back (driver's side) that was a defective weld from the factory they replaced after only a month. But that I believe was an anomaly and I'm guessing the original owner would have taken care of something like that.
In terms of first service covered under CPO, that wasn't the case with our RLX CPO - they did a service before we took delivery, but not after that. But there were some CPO changes since we did ours 2 years ago, so that might have changed...

Hey Z. When did you buy your CPO? Enhancements were made to the CPO warranty effective Aug 1 2019 that INCLUDES the first maintenance free. Prior to that it was not part of the program.

Hope that helps.
Agree with the TSB20-015. Describe the symptoms to them and they should offer to update things for no charge. If they don’t, then request them to perform it under the warranty and speak to service manager if needed. This has to be a weekly occurrence at every Acura dealer based on the widespread issues owners have had with the ZF9.
Good Luck!
