bumps on low profile tires. how dangerous are they?

i just came from a tire shop because i had wheel vibration and they said that i had huge bumps sticking out of the tires. they said its pretty common with low profile tires whenever you hit a pothole or a sharp bump on a freeway. they said it needs to be replaced because it can blow out anytime. either way i will replace them because i original bought used 19's for $30 a piece. new tires will cost about $138 for nexen. if i continue to get these bumps even on new tires, im probably just going to stick my stocks back on. i definitely dont want to be spending money on replacing tires multiple times in a year.

they also said low profile tires for 19's are more expensive compared to 18's or 20's. he said tires for 20's are cheaper than 19's

Never had that happen to me before, and I drive in DC, which has pretty bad roads. I've been on 235/40/18 and 245/40/18 mostly. I hit a pretty bad pothole once that rashed a rim, but it didn't damage the tire.

And yes, new 19" tires are insanely expensive.

Im curious as see what the bumps look like. Is it a buldge on the sidewall where the rubber was pinched between the road and the rim? Or something on the tread? Ive had flat spots before from e-brake turning but I have never had or heard of "bumps".

its like on the rim of the side wall and tread. typically the area where you get baldness on the tires. its a huge swollen bulge

I doubt low profile tires are really anymore dangerous than any other tire per se, think of all the cars that have OEM high performance low profile tires. All tires are regulated and have to meet standards and quality control, sure there are bad batches and you could end up with a bad tire but that's what warranties are for. Good luck though with your choice.

That sucks. Hopefully new tires will last longer. Your car with stockies wouldnt look right.

I actually had a bump on my stock tire and was really afraid of driving when I got the 19 but so far no bump or any other damage to a rim/tire
