2012 -- used wheels an TPMS question
Hello,
I picked up a set of 5x114 17x8" STi BBSs with usable tires for a decent price on CL. I put them on and was expecting issues due to lack of TPMS, but was surprised when nothing unusual happened. The tire display shows "pressure OK" and 32psi on all 4 wheels. I did check the pressure to make sure it's okay with a gauge which showed 35psi, but the gauge is new to me and could be lying. I'll try to pump up the tires more to see if the car displays something different.
Is the car just confused and is showing some previous values (showed 34psi before removing OEM wheels), or is it possible that there are sensors already installed in these wheels?
Here are some quick picks -- I'm not into the black wheel look personally, though it looks a lot better in person -- but these are forged light-ish wheels of correct offset for a good price. They are powedercoated and are mint, but I'm thinking I'll have to have them re-done gunmetal, gray or silver.

My brightness is on max and I can't even see how the wheels look lol. I think your car is just confused. It'll find out you're not running TPMS soon. Some members go a couple of days~weeks before the tire pressure light comes up.

Yeah, they are way black. I was looking getting a set of STi BBSs to bore out anyway because they are forged, cheap and 53+. I like the fitment, it's just the color I'd have to deal with.
We'll see how long it takes for the car to catch on. What will happen, traction control issues?
Thank you much,
Stan

I've driven to work with them on, maybe 15 miles -- no light so far. As long as traction control will still function properly I'm fine for the time being -- I'm not doing trackdays.. I'll try to turn off traction control and see if the car reacts.

i kept tpms in stock wheels for winter so i can turn vsa off/on if i get stuck but during summer i just take the fuse out so the lights wont turn and stay on all the time and it usually takes around 70 miles for the lights to turn on

Sweet! Thank you guys for the information.
I did try turning off traction control and was able to get lots of wheel spin at takeoff (it's raining now), and with traction control on the car cuts power and prevents spin, so everything is working 100% now. Let me see how long 'till I can't turn off traction control, 70 miles should come quick.
So, if I don't install TPMS, will there be no way to turn off traction control, or can the system be over-ridden via a fuse? This would just be in case I'd want to do a track day on wheels that do not have TPMS. I could just transfer the sensors from stockers to these, but the woman really likes the looks of stockers lol, so I better leave them as-is. They'd make good winter wheels anyway.

Easiest way would be to just get a set of TPMS for your track wheels.
