Program the key remote to turn on headlights during unlock?

Hello, first of all, I've had my 2010 TSX since August and LOVE IT! A major upgrade from my last vehicle which was a 2000 Honda Prelude. Anyways, just as the title says, is there a way to do that? One day I was getting frustrated with the terrible range I get with the remote to unlock/lock the car so I went and grabbed my Driver 2 key fob to test it out. I don't remember how the range was for that one, but I did notice a big difference. When I unlocked the car, the headlights came on. I was shocked/surprised by it and loved it. Now it's just preference for me but I would rather keep using my Driver 1 key fob than the Driver 2 key fob. I know I know, kind of stupid but for some reason that's just how I feel. Anyways, if anybody knows that'll be awesome but noticed that there were no other threads about this feature when doing a search for it. Thanks and hope to get a reply!

did you leave the headlights on before you locked the car? because if you left it on and the hit the unlock button on the keyfob it will turn on the headlights

You need to leave your headlights on "auto" and also change the settings for the driver 1 key fob. Check the manual for details on how to do that. And important to make sure that the driver 1 key fob is "linked" to tell the car hat it is the driver 1. This is done by pressing lock and unlock buttons at the same time. The red led will flash once, i think.

Is this such a good idea, though? I would imagine the sudden powering up/powering down of the headlights often would shorten the bulbs' lifespan.

Not to mention eventually affecting the battery life, which is why I disabled the headlights staying on after closing the driver's door on our 10 TSX I4.

So I guess none of you guys use your signal lights. Come on, they only come on when you unlock your doors when it's dark out. Hardly worth losing sleep over.

I would suggest doing a little research between the difference in the bulbs found in our cars. Or better yet, just start your car when it's dark out, turn your headlights on and pay close attention...you will see a brief "blip" that occurs when they start up/warm up. When you quickly power up a HID bulb by unlocking your car and then it immediately powers down, it's not good for the life of the bulb and will shorten it.

But hey if you want to blow bulbs much sooner than normal, by all means knock yourself out! Maybe then it will be "worth losing sleep over"?

HIDs are capable of lasting at least 3 times the length of any standard bulb. but it does take a few thousand volts to start 'em and I would agree with a few other replies that it could deminish the bulbs life by setting it up that way. And it costs a pretty penny to replace 'em

Get a grip. They only will come on when it's DARK outside. They DO NOT immediately power down. Mine come on and STAY on while I start the car. And guess what? It's already dark, so I would have been turning my lights on anyway.

not true. I had mine on the auto setting and they would turn on in my garage at home and then off when I pulled out. They would also switch on when I pulled into the gargage at work. In addition, right on the cusp of when it's light enough for them to turn off completely, they would switch on and off on my commute into work when I would driver under tree cover, etc. All reasons why I now turn my lights on and off manually!

You do know you can adjust the sensitivity to the darkness, right? I've never had mine come on while driving under trees. In the garage, yes, until I adjusted the sensitivity. I guess we will agree to disagree.

You're not going to notice any adverse effect from the headlights coming on with the key.

You'll shorten the lifespan more by flashing the high beams or the alarm going on. But honestly, nothing is proven. The whole shorten the lifespan because my auto headlights come on in the garage or when it's dark outside is ridiculous.

There are 2 types of bulbs we are talking about: the HID low beam bulbs (and associated ballasts), and the regular hi-beam halogens that we use for flashing. The auto feature is linked to the low-beam headlights, which are the HIDs, and the speculation here is that repeated rapid/short on/off cycles of the HIDs will shorten their life.

Not trying to step on any toes... but who really cares if the lights die earlier? If you're that worried about the cost or pinching pennies that hard then you should've bought a civic :X

Sure, let's just be wasteful because we can.
