P0341 Cam position, timing chain replacement
69k, mostly trouble free miles so far. Only issue was a noisy VCT actuator 20k ago. All under warranty. Last week i received the P0341 (camshaft position sensor) MIL. Cleared it at first, 3 days later it was back. Called the dealer to get it in while still under the 6/70k power train warranty. Long story short, chain has stretched presumably due to a bad tensioner. Dealer regretfully is covering the whole ordeal. While insisting I change my oil more frequently. Car has visited the dealer on time every single oil change. I call BS. I can't be the only one with a timing chain replacement under 70k, can I? This is absurd to have this type of failure so soon. (Yes I did search, in context to the MIL I received, no avail). |
Ii haven't seen too many timing chain wear posts but I'd be surprised if you're only one. I'm at 140K on my 2010 TSX w/o problems.

Hi,
New here. First post. I just bought a 2012 tsx wagon. Has a bad actuator and am trying to see if Acura will cover it under warranty. My mechanic is a Honda tech and is familiar with this issue with Hondas and suggested replacing the chain and tensioner as well so maybe it should have been done at the time the actuator was done on your car. My Acura dealership confirmed my problem but said that this job is only for that part and doesn't mention the others. I have an 02 RSX that had a cam position code after it stalled on me one day and my mechanic told me the chain is probably stretched. He said it turned out to be the actuator but still suggested the chain be done bc it was probably stretched too. He was right. It was stretched. Replaced chain, tensioner, and guides with the actuator and the car has been running fine since. That was maybe 10k ago and the car is at 240k now. Hoping I can get Acura to sort this out for me but if they say the chain has nothing to do with this issue then I'll probably go to my mechanic. |
If you have actuator rattle on startup, the chain is not the problem. There is a long thread on this site on the subject of actuator rattle. Bottom line is replacing the actuator is not a reliable fix. I had a very intermittent rattle that went away after changing to synthetic oil, however that may be only a coincidence.
Acura has covered actuator rattle for some folks but not the chain, a much larger job! good luck |
