Is this normal?

Hey guys, so I've owned my used TSX for about a week now. There's a couple of things I've noticed and I'm not sure whether or not it's normal for a TSX to do (an easy noob question to answer probably). One is while braking, is this how the RPM's usually behave, I guess it's the gears changing, but I've never noticed this with any other car before. My dad has an RDX and I don't recall this happening to his car either, but it's been a while since I drove it so I could be wrong. I have some video, if you look at 45 seconds you see the RPM drop near 1 go back up and then around 20mph have a bigger drop under 1 and go back up.

It happens again at 2:45, but this time I didn't apply the brakes as hard and looks much smoother. I have test driven a couple TSX's before, but I can't recall if this happened in all of them or not.

Yes this car seems to be acting completely normal.. Those rpm changes are just the transmission downshifting. Enjoy your new tsx

The transmission will downshift under braking (though nowhere near as severely as it does in the 1st gen cars). It may not though, depending on how fast you're decelerating. Also, you'll see the tach occasionally jump up and down a little at low speed and this is the torque converter locking and unlocking. There's an example of this in your video, at around 40 mph and the revs drop to 1K. That's the torque converter unlocking. Acura's attempt at freewheeling I guess.

Phew. That's good to hear (thanks to the other guys too). I mean it wasn't causing any issues so I figured it was normal, but I'm a little anal right now since I just got the car and it was used, want to make sure everything works normal since I only have warranty for so long.

My other semi-question would be when exactly does vtec "kick in"? I had two occurrences where I literally floor it, one of them you actually see that huge spike in RPMs and obviously the sound, the other I think I was at 20 and 2nd gear, but it just slowly went through 3,4 and 5 RPMs till I hit 60.

Driving it around for a week or so, I kind of have a sense when it will work. Sometimes when I'm cruising around 2-3 RPMs and floor it it responds. IDK just seems kind of inconsistent to me, so I'm curious as to under what conditions will it work.

On the stock car vtec comes in 5k in first gear, 5.5k in second year. (I THINK). My car hasn't been stock for a while.

The vtec crossover is not very noticeable in the k24 though.

I think I read that on this forum also. I kind of don't get that though, in the video at like 20 seconds I give it a little gas so it jumps at 3k RPM and as soon as I floor it, it jumps to 5k RPMs. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying but it sounds like you said it only works at 5k RPMs.

First gear definitely sounds right though I assumed that also. I thought the combo was 1st gear, 2-3k RPM.

When you are flooring it it's downshifting. And yes, the vtec only comes in past a certain RPM (5k)

Oh okay I understand now, that makes sense. 5k huh, that's kind of lame.
