Fog Light Fix Revisited...

I just noticed my driver side fog light is cracked. I've read numerous forums on fixes and solutions from chicken wire to glass to OEM replacement etc.

My question: I'm debating on removing the bumper and placing a layer of Lexan between the bumper and the fog light to act as a barrier.

I'm also considering buying an aftermarket lamp and doing the same thing with Lexan between the two.

Does anyone have input on this matter? I want to have a game plan before I remove my bumper.

Thanks!

the lens of the oem fog is not flat so sticking a piece in between wont work well.

you can get the fog out without removing the bumper with some work or just take it off and make it easier. thats what I do. DIY are here quick search.

once fog in hand you could make a lexan replacement lens.

cheap lexan from THD or Lowes will melt pretty quick but will work for 6 months a year. there is better lexan but it takes some looking. mcmaster-carr sells some good stuff and you dont need to buy a sheet of it.

the lens is round so the cutting wont be too bad.

GL.

I just realized something::: all my comments are about my 2012.....which would be 11+ models. if you have a 9-10 then all the above is NG/ sorry

fog light lense replacement

I had the same problem as you. Both of my 2010 tsx fog light lenses were shattered from rocks.

Materials you will need:
.093 thick lexan clear
GE silicone sealant clear, marine grade
hacksaw
sandpaper
oven
wet towel and baking sheet/pizza tray
phillips screwdriver
flathead screwdriver to popout clips that hold bumper on

I took the bumper off and removed both fog lights. You can unscrew the actual light housing from the bumper.

once you do this you will have just the metal reflector bowl with the cracked lense in your hands. Be sure to unsnap the black plastic bezel on the front of the lights. These hold the glass tightly to the reflector. You will need to reuse these for the new lexan lenses

You will need to put the lights in the oven at 250 degrees for about 2 minutes. Wet a towel and place the lights on the towel and make sure the rack is on the middle of the oven.

After taking out the lights I used a wooden chopstick to press out the broken lenses from the bulb socket hole. Since the glass was already broken I just pushed out each piece into the trashcan. you dont want shards of glass all over your house/carpet/table.

Once you remove all of the broken glass pieces you will need to scrape out any remaining shards from the rubber grey butyl sealant left in the housing. I used the wooden chopstick here again like a scraper

Be sure to remove the metal rings that go around the bulbs inside the reflector bowl. You dont need these and they heat up and cause burn marks. In fact when I had laminx they burnt my yellow laminx. With them removed i get even more light output and it lights up another 5-10 feet on the left and right of the car.

I purchased some clear GE silicone sealant, marine grade. They sell it in the same section as the lexan at Home depot/lowes.

I purchased the .093 thick lexan.

You will need to trace out the circular shape of the lense. Just place the whole metal reflector bowl face down onto the lexan and trace it out with a black marker.

You will need to use a saw to cut out the lenses. I tried using a dremel but it was taking way too long so I used my hack saw. To make it easier I just roughly cut out a square shape and then worked the circular shape by cutting out the edges like a stop sign.

Once you get the round shape you will need to place each lense on the housing and test fit to see how much overlap there is. Use your marker to trace out the edges that need to be cut off.

After this you will need to sand down the edges. Once it all fits you can lay an even bead of silicone sealant and press the lense down on to the housing.

Since the lense is flat and the OEM lense was convex, you will need to reuse the black plastic outer bezel and snap it back onto the front of the housing. This will press the lexan into place and hold it tightly. I also applied a bead of silicone to the edge of the plastic that presses against the lexan to complete the seal.

Also apply a layer of silicone on the back side of the reflector housing.

Be careful not to smudge the sealant on the lense. I accidentally did this and its a pain to clean.

be sure to have some rubbing alcohol handy.

In regards to the lexan, everyone mentions the plastic melting. I made my lenses over 3 weeks ago and I have not had any bubbling, melting, or fogging. In fact I just washed my car today and sprayed the fogs with a hose and I have not had any fogging at all. If you are driving around with the fogs on all of the time then It might start bubbling/melting.

I only use my fogs at night so I dont think I will run into melting issues.

2snail, what about the other light which is intact? I only want to do this once so when I take the bumper off to fix one light I want to put something on the second one to ensure it doesn't break also. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect the intact light?

Also, I've heard of everyone removing the metal ring that goes around the bulb. Obviously this causes the light to disperse but are the lights still effective during fog?

the problem is the original lenses are convex so they curve outward. The lexan is completely flat so they would not match.

I have experienced some fog, here but I could not tell a difference. It looked to same to me. In fact there is more light output on the ground now with the yellow bulbs I swapped out. I will try and take some pictures when I get a chance

You can place laminx on the existing intact light to protect it from damage, but with the metal ring inside, it will burn the laminx.

This still leaves you with one curved lense and one flat lense.

Snail, lemme see what it looks like. There is a guy in Canada on another site who just said forget it and put rubber liner over his fogs. I may just do that.

Lots of work and looks good and should protect you from future breakage but can you recommend where to buy a replacement for the OEM white fogs? My local Acura wants 300 for my wifes 2010 TSX V6 with Crystal black Pearl paint ?
Is this Country Great or What
