Car eats oil?

2009 base 6 spd manual. Car eats oil. low lever oil light comes on when stopping or going around a sharp turn. Check oil and is low. I am consistently putting oil in this car. 32,000 miles. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Welcome. Perhaps you should take the car to the dealership and have them check it out? If you don't see anything obvious under the hood, it'll need to go on a lift to be inspected.

considering that, should still be under warrenty

but just one question first though, when was the last oil change, and the one before that (mainly how many miles ago); and do you drive the car hard occasionally?

Changed oil on schedule. As for how I drive, hard occasionally could describe it. I mean I dont beat the crap out of the car but these engines are built to rev baby.........

and along with that higher oil consumption, it's part of the game (with really any engine out there) if you want to rev it higher on a regular basis (mine was burning a shit load of oil also, then when i switched jobs, i switch driving routes and times, and my oil consumption went dramatically down too since i am not able to get on it nearly as much as before...

btw i am figuring you are probably somewhere in the ball park of like 16-19 mpg for gas mileage too? (cause i have trouble even getting it into the 17's let alone 18's and above )

and you mention the end of the lease is coming up , do you really care about the long term effects on the motor, and i want your honest opinion

I average 25 MPG I dont drive it that hard...I cant think that this car would burn this much oil based on how I drive it. Just seems weird. I love the car and was thinking of buying it outright but I am concerned about the Oil consumption. Maybe I just need 2 more cylinders....

This is me. I drive mostly in the city and I keep it in S and rev it when I can. That said, I use synthetic oil and check my fluid levels regularly, and generally try to take care of my car, even though it's a lease.

My dealer did my last oil change, and they actually filled it up a little past the upper dot. Despite the way I drive, the oil level has not dropped.

What kind of oil are you using? Have you checked underneath the car for slow oil leaks? For example, if the dealer reused the drain plug washer, you might see a very, very slow leak that's not noticeable over a short period of time. It might manifest itself as a tiny drop of oil that just seems to hang there forever.

I have also seen the oil level light, but that was after a very sharp turn when I was avoiding a road hazard. I'm guessing that's like the gas level indicator that changes when on a steep grade.

My car is an 09 Tech, has 47K miles on the odometer and have no problem with oil consumption. The drain plug may be a problem, drop the bottom engine cove and see if the area surround the plug is oily, and also look at the cove.

That said, my 1990 Civic Si was like that until 70K mile mark, then it's 1 quart every thousand miles. Used 20W50 oil in that car until I sold it in 2008 with 261K miles on it.

warranty FTW

btw you say high oil consumption, lets get a figure first, so how much oil are you adding per say 1,000 miles? less then a quart? if so, that is still considered normal by most manufactures, a little high though (but what i was averaging roughly ), and you do have to remember every motor design out there burns some oil as a byproduct (no motor is perfect), there is normally enough reserve though, to get you through oil changes, and still be within the marks on the dipstick

shit Mazda rotaries, actually inject oil to burn as per design, so those really need to be checked often, and topped off

edit: how is your air filter too?, a restricted one can potentially increase oil consumption too

i am more talking open road/highway, and hitting 100 on a regular basis though, where city is mainly just sitting in traffic and burning gas (talking about more sustained high rpm's and living in VTEC..., and engine braking hard, not just sitting there idling most of the time )

as far as an oil level light, no such thing on our cars, only a low oil pressure light (which if you turn sharply and make the oil slosh around, and cause the oil pickup to pick some air up, will cause the light to at least flicker)

I have to jump into this discussion. There's absolutely NOTHING normal about this level of oil consumption (or any level for that matter). Honda may say that anything less than 1 quart per 1000 miles is "normal", but that's just to CTA. Normal is adding no oil between changes. That's been my experience (05 w/ 135K miles, 07 w/ 110K) and it seems to be the experience of most here (I said most...). There seems to a certain (small) percentage of all cars (not just TSX's) that burn oil, and some burn allot. Sounds like you've got one of those. And it is burning it..... if it was leaking that much oil, it would be all over the place.... on the underside of the car, the engine compartment, on the driveway, and/or the garage floor (1 tbsp will give you a minimum 6" stain on the floor). I'd reconsider purchasing the car at lease end. There are plenty of TSX's out there that don't burn oil.

are you running mobile 1 oil synthetic by chance? if so and if you drive hard that oil evaporates really fast, i always had to add oil in my rsx-s until i switched to royal purple. do you see blue smoke coming out your exhaust? that is burnt oil. check your collant too if its a brown color you have internal engine leak.

i'm going to have to chime in on this as well. both times i have changed my oil (i have about 22k mi and last changed it about 6k miles ago), oil has dropped to the bottom dot on the dipstick after 5-6k miles and i've had to add almost a quart to top it off. i don't let dealerships change my oil because it takes me 20 minutes to do it myself, but i'm thinking maybe i should take it in for this next one and let them enter a note in the system so that it's documented?

i don't drive my car hard at all - maybe red-line it once a week, if that, on an on-ramp. i average ~26-27 mpg and shift around 3-4k RPM.

I only got 7.5K mile on my 2010 and just went through only one A1 service so I can't say for sure but my specific case, at 7.5K, I don't see it dropped a bit, b4 doing the A1 service, I checked the dipstick and oil level was still at (and a little higher) the upper dot, viscosity was as good as new. Let see how this one (just done A1) gets to.

in most cases when a car is burning oil its usually the vavle seals. " about 150k you should see about getting them replaced.

So you have three posts. Each one is bumping an old post and in this case (like the others) you are giving goofball advice. Here, the OP has 32k miles and you are suggesting that he gets a repair at 150k miles.

I'd suggest that you spend more time reading and don't bump ancient threads. You should also make sure that your advice is relevant and accurate.
