Longtime lurker, first time thread poster. Does anyone know how to replace the gas tank door/arm assembly? It's part number 74480-TLO-G00. Or if anyone has the service manual and can upload the instructions on how to remove it, I would be extremely grateful.
Yesterday while filling up my TSX, I accidentally walked backed into the gas tank door while it was still open. To my astonishment the entire assembly bent back and put a deep gash into the side of my car.
Even worse, the body panel for the gas tank door broke off too (apparently the gas tank door assembly is entirely plastic and the clips that held the body panel broke off.
I already purchased the part through Acura for $80, and really would like to avoid having to pay for someone to install it if I can do it myself.
Thanks in advance
Not very mechanical savvy, but I do enjoy tinkering with my car. I've changed my own oil filters and have replaced a bad starter on an 1998 Accord before. So I should have the tools necessary.
The four plastic hinges to attach the body panel for the gas tank door broke off.
Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, the clips that hold the body panel piece broke, so I went ahead and ordered a new piece.
@icrap, I think you're right. I found this link that leads me to believe I can simply remove the entire gas tank assembly and replace it (assuming what I purchased replaces the entire unit).
@TexasHonda and @Majofo - I'll look into it! I was just going to leave it otherwise, since I don't wanna shell out a ton of money for a single dent/scratch.
Looks like it is on a crease and there are paint issues. A simple PDR won't fix that.
That's a myth. I've seen numerous PDR jobs on creases like that. I don't see paint issues. I believe that's just minor scuffs and reflection you're observing.
Unfortunately CEB is correct, there is some paint issues (bad picture of the dent/scratch). I recently had to get some bodywork done on the car and one of the guys mentioned an alternative to having the body panels removed for repair. I'll ask them if maybe they can at least pull out the dent.
As for the gas tank hinge arm, the dealership was supposed to have the part yesterday, but when I called they said they couldn't find it and had to (re-) order the part for me again today.
I'm hoping this is a job I can do myself. Looks like I just need a screwdriver for the screw below the rubber push lift cover and needle nose pliers to disconnect the locking mechanism... Hopefully everything else is just held together with clips and can be pulled out - like the front and rear bumpers.
