HDR shots of my Palladium TSX

A friend of mine wanted some practice taking car shots with his Canon DSLR. He took quite a few shots, but not as many as we had wanted as the sun wasn't out and then it began to rain. The cloudiness ended up making some of these shots turn out even better though, and I think the pics turned out great overall. The first and second were made from 3 separate exposures and the last one was made with 4 exposures. I hope you enjoy them.

The last one is my favorite... and is also my laptop's new wallpaper.

If you'd like the original size pics to view, they are here .

Very nice!
I really like the last one.

I'm not sure if it just the angle that the picture was taken, or if it was more in reason because of the extra shot, but the black from the headlight housing really popped to me for some reason. It looks really nice.

I Love HDR shots. I've been toying with them myself, but it's kinda hard with just crapy Point and shoot cameras and a wannabe tripod.

No Photoshop here. My friend took 3-4 shots for each pic at different exposure settings, then put them through a program called Photomatix (Mac only I believe). Once Photomatix has combined the 3-4 images, you get a screen with a bunch of settings and a preview of how your picture is going to look. Once you've changed the settings to your liking, you're done, the software does the rest.

From what I understand though, there are other programs that create HDR images aside from Photomatix. I don't know a whole lot about it, it wasn't my camera, my mac or my software... just my car and a parking garage, my friend did the rest as I watched.

A little bit off topic, but for photo editing, I have been using the software called Neoimaging for years. It's very simple and focused on photo-editing only. It also has the option of combine several photos with different EV setting into a HDR photo.

Check it out: http://www.neoimaging.cn/en/

Very nice. I have a Polished Metal Metalic with the Aero kit and was going to get those factory wheels in black chrome. Too funny.

BTW. The best time to take photos is when the sun is low in the sky or when it is cloudy.

That last one looks pretty good but they all show signs of cheesy automatic HDR programs. To do it right you need manually manipulate the various layers. A perfect example of how the program sucks at doing it right is the lighter donut of shadow all the way around the actual shadow under the car.

HDR is all the rage right now because it makes your photos really pop out into the third dimension. I think it's over used and more often than not, implemented poorly. I don't mean this as any reflection on you personally or your (or your buddies or whatever) skills, but these photos are fairly representative of how not to do HDR well.

The car and setup all look good. Some one just needs to spend some time hand editing the layers to do the shoot justice.

I also have the sport bumber kit on a Palladium TSX. Have you noticed that the rear bumper looks darker in color from certain angles than the rest of the car? It appears that way in some of your pics. Please respond. . .

nice shots and sick car

however, clarification, but those shots are NOT hdr, those are more 'tonal mapping' if anything. true pure hdr is an image that has a 'perfect' exposure, meaning it accounts for all the defficiencies of a camera only being able to capture a single image at a single exposure, thus leaving out details in a scene that the human eye can see but the camera cannot. in essence, an hdr image is exactly as the 'human eye' sees a scene in reality. it should not look surrealistic or cartoonish in any way. It can be done with a high quality dslr and high quality raw image, or of course by manually taking multiple exposures with a point and shoot at various spaced exposures then combining.

Prime example of true hdr (notice how it looks like pure reality)...in a regular photo the sky and subtle details would be drowned out/lost due to single exposure:

Those tsx's are really growing on me btw congrats on the car
