DIY custom rear lip. lots of pics

inspired from the type S rear. in this case i just flipped the shape vertically to match my exhaust tips.

youll see some side skirt splitters in the middle. i plan to paint match it with the rest of the kit in the future

i taped up the rear bumper first
brushed PVA as a releasing agent
let PVA dry
brushed resin all over the bumper
layed fiberglass
brushed resin all over the fiberglass
let it dry for a few hours
cut up some styrofoam for shaping
used hot glue to make it stick
i will wrap the styrofoam in foil with 3M adhesive spray
then fiberglass over the styrofoam/foil
let it cure 24 hours
pull out the plug
retest fit the plug
lay bondo
sand and smooth

It's crazy how much custom work you've attempted. I definitely give you a lot of credit. Looking forward to seeing what the finished product looks like for the rear.

I do not like those sideskirt splitters whatsoever though.

the middle portion of the design is pretty much set. im still debating on how to design the side portions of the rear. im also not sure if i like how its rounded. i think ill make it more blocky

if the side splitters dont look good, ill just fabricate my own side skirts off my 01 prelude. they're mugen side skirts. id just have to fiberglass, shorten it and then create brackets

Wow, defcon you are a brave man as usual. And congrats on the upcoming fatherhood. Don't worry about time, you won't get any sleep for the next two years or so anyways....

Is this what you are trying to do:

Think I found the inspiration for your side skirts...

hehe

Rear lip looks decent, though. Good luck.

I would pass on the side splitters. Look too much "tacked on". Of course I prefer a cleaner look myself.

Some of your mod attempts, while not my taste, get an A for effort...like your fogs/driving lights and LS tips. LS tips look good, but damn dude, finish up the housings for the fogs! You had a great idea but you never fully finished it! I'm afraid that your front and rear DIY lips will end up the same way...as an excellent/brave idea ruined by piss poor execution.

Then there are some mods where, honestly, you are cheapening the ride. For example, the stick on hood vents, different wheel styles on either side of the car, used infiniti rims, pep boys "side splitters," ungodly use of faux carbon fiber tape and other colored film, garage door liner as a front lip, etc, etc., etc. These types of mods take a perfectly elegant/luxurious car and turn it into something you see in Mexico driving strangers around for 1 peso/mile.

I'm not judging your taste bro...I really do want to see your car look good so take this as constructive criticism, nothing else.

grigio, id rather see this type of constructive crticism than the one liners. at least i can respect it and understand where youre coming from. yea i agree with what youre saying and youve noticed that ive taken majority of them off. the fog light housing can be redone since it was rushed and my first time working with fiberglass. ive learned my lessons with the fog light housing and taken the mistakes ive learned into consideration with my current projects. the fiberglass projects im working on at the moment have taken much longer and im putting in more effort into symmetry and trying to actually make it look nice. if my lip kit turns out to be a disaster, i can just scrap them and run without them or try again and redo it. if i can find more time after the lip kit, id definitely could redo the foglight housing. side splitters are from extreme dimensions - not pep boys i appreciate your opinion though

had some time to work on the mugen replica side skirts off my 01 prelude

Test fitting. length wise it fits well against the OEM mud guards

cleaned some of it up with simple green

taped it up

polishing compound used as a releasing agent on over the tape

1st layer of fiberglass done.
ill be adding 2 more layers of fiberglass after it cures for a day.
ill then pop it off the plug, do some trimming for perfect fitment.

stay tuned...

Wow.... definitely great work going on in here. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. The side fins on the skirts looked out of place, but it looks like you figured that out by yourself. So, so far, so good!

woot. 3 day weekend to work on my car fulltime.

had some time to trim the edges for fitment
put some body filler on the rear.
also i changed up the design which i think looks a bit cleaner

i had to do some trimming in the middle for fitment

add a tab on the rear side skirt
also trimmed some excess fiberglass.
i will put body filler on the side skirts tomorrow

here's the rear lip detached.
i cut out the middle piece and clean up around it.
i plan to put a painted black grill when its done.
ill put another layer of body filler tomorrow

then its just a lot of sanding

You're expecting a kid, right? Who's getting your wife the pickles and ice cream while you're working on the car???

here's an update

i have to put an indefinite hold on this project. i do not have the time at the moment since my wife just delivered a new born son so my priorities have changed. after 36 hours of labor he was accidently born in our kitchen floor. we were on our way to the hospital, i ran out to get the car for my wife, i walked back in to open the door and my wife squatting in a pool of blood holding our son in her arms. i called the paramedics and my wife and son were taken to the hospital. he's perfectly healthy and fine. so im a first time dad and its been a life changing event.

when i have more time, i will definitely come back and complete this project.

thanks all. to be continued....
