H Pipe most commonly used to describe a rwd V6 or V8, V10, V12 where both pipes after the manifolds are run parallel down the length of the car, and a balance tube is made between them to "balance" the pulses each and to the other.

J-Pipe most commonly referred to a FWD V6 and connects the two primary exhaust manifolds and turns into one larger pipe that, in these cars cases then routes to a single pre-cat or single catalytic converter, then out the back from a cat-back.

Downpipe is usually (IMHO) referred to as the exhaust piping that comes out of the turbine housing on a turbocharged car. It's for spent gases that have already done their job turning the turbine, and they are on their way to a cat or cat back.

I don't know what people are referring to on these 4 cylinder, 45 degree angle pre-cat...outlets that incorporate a pre-cat.

Hope that helps.
