TSX and Samsung Galaxy S2 owners?

I call for help, all TSX (especially 2010) owners who also have Android (specifically SGS2) smartphone.
How do you (we) play music (assume .mp3, .wma, whatever that our TSX does support) that stored on the phone (both internal memory and external uSD card) on the car audio system via USB, not bluetooth or 3.5" AUX jack.
I searched for days, many instructions, do this and/or do that but still fail.
Here's one: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10460099-48.html
Basically, after connect USB Mass Storage, "Unsupported" error flashing on the TSX display.
How do you guys work this out?

Thanks all

I don't know the details, but could it be the filesystem on the phone or card that's incompatible? In my experience, FAT32 has the best compatibility. Also, this was mentioned in the guide: after plugging in the phone, is there a setting you have to turn on on the phone itself?

I have a Galaxy S, so I'll try to look into it tomorrow if I can find my cable. However, I'm not sure if I agree with CNET in that USB format is better sounding than AUX. I have a usb stick with music on it and it sounds really flat in the car. When I play Pandora with an AUX cable it sounds so much better...which doesnt really make that much sense because my mp3's should be in a less compressed file format.

Thanks all for looking into this.
Yes, I made sure the external uSD was FAT32, still didn't work.
I bounced around between USB-MTP (with USB debugging mode off) and USB mass storage. On the TSX display, either USB Load then Unsupported.

I also hit a funny but scary scenario that after plug and unplug the SGS2 a couple of times, it sucked all the juice out of my battery, I meant the car's battery, up to the point that I couldn't start the vehicle, all warning lights lit but audio didn't work anymore.
I stopped then and let it recovery over night. Thanks Buddha, this morning, it's OK.

I have a SGSII. I'll connect my phone to my car and see what's up. The only time I've connected my phone to my car was to charge it. I still had it streaming internet radio through BT though.
THat combo seemed to work, although the streaming app was eating the battery as fast as it was being charged...
Not sure if you can play music directly off the USB connection. I'll give it a shot later on and see if someone else hasn't done so

Okay I gave it a shot.
I tried putting an mp3 file into various logical locations on my phone storage. No matter what I tried, I still got a "No data" message on the TSX.
I didn't play around longer than five minutes as I didnt want our weak battery getting drained. I'll give it another try sometime later. I think it's doable.

Thanks a lot, b.ike
Yeap, don't kill yourself over it.
At least I know I'm not the only one hitting the issue.
If somehow you find out, pls update.
Very appreciate!

Hi Everyone,
New member here. I have a 2009 TSX and was wondering if anyone had used the bluetooth music streaming?
I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S2. The Galaxy Tab streams music crystal clear but the S2 is choppy.
Is anyone else getting this? Sorry to be off topic.

I too, have tried the direct USB connection but can't get it to work.

Just tried the 3.5" AUX cable that I bought at Monoprice a while ago.
+ TSX audio volume set to 8, which the setting that I am on when listening music via usb stick and fm radio
+ SGS2 audio volume set to 5, which is loud enough for me when using with in-ear headset.
+ Same music stored on both USB stick and SGS2 external uSD card.
Now, with those settings, plug the 3.5" AUX into both ends, switch car audio to AUX Data In (the only option besides USB and AUX with bluetooth), I can't hear a thing, I have to crank the volume to 20+, 25 to be exact for the same loudness.
After trying both SGS2 usb/aux options, I believe I'm better off with usb stick, which small enough (completely stays inside the compartment, no wire) and better performance.

I never try Bluetooth, in fact, I always avoid using it. To me, 2 reasons
1. Not privacy for callings (when you're not alone in the car)
2. It sucks up a lot of battery out of the SGS2.

However, I might try it out, will report back when I have a chance.

Yeah, I know that the privacy thing is important to a lot of people. The Galaxy s2 actually has an option in the settings to choose what you're connecting.
For instance, the profile gives you the option to connect to phone and/or media.
You can choose only to connect to media audio. It's pretty cool. The only problem is that the audio quality isn't great.
I've done some research and found that my Galaxy Tab uses Bluetooth 2.1 and the GS2 uses 3.0. I'm not sure this has anything to do with anything..
Hopefully a software patch can resolve the problem.
I spoke to Samsung Tech Support and they said that Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to AT&T on Feb 19. We'll see if that fixes the problem.

Any luck with the Bluetooth streaming?

Hi I just noticed the post and wanted to chip in. I have a Samsung captivate running 2.3.5 and running into the exact same problem for a long time. While it is related to a compatibility issue, it is not really a 2.1 vs 3.0. Basically in stereo bluetooth connectivity (A2DP profile)...there is a bit pool negotiation. Unfortunately... in android (upto gingerbread versions) this bit pool setting is messed up. This is an open issue [ Issue 9888:Poor A2DP sound quality] in android. You can google it. Now, some manufacturers like HTC build their own code on top of android to handle certain features like this one. Hence the problem is specific to Samsung...since they decided to stick with native android code. Unfortunately, there is no solution to this problem. Hope this helps!

My understanding is that the USB plug only provides an audio feed using flashdrives or iphones/pods/etc. i have given up, using nexus S. Bluetooth streaming though is better quality than FM or XM and only occasionally fails to start automaticially. There's occasional drop outs too. To get a cable audio feed I need to use the 3.5mm but can still charge though usb. i really ought to just use a flash drive.

Sorry for the very late reply, kind of bz and didn't have a chance to test out earlier.
Anyway, just yesterday, I've retried my SGS2 with USB port, still, couldn't play any music on the phone. It didn't show as "No data" but "Unsupported".
I then setup the Bluetooth and streaming music via AUX Bluetooth. It was good, much better than I expected (maybe 'cuz I had low expectation). Still, I had to crank the volume up a bit, played nicely, very nice. I didn't play through an hour yet but for at least 20' on the road, no drop-off or hiccup.
As someone had mentioned, I suggest continuing charging while playing via Bluetooth.

Side note 1: When I retried the SGS2 via USB, again, it sucked the juice out of my battery.
Side note 2: I hate the HomeLink bluetooth on the TSX, it just automatically takes the higher priority then my bluetooth headset, so everytime, I get in the car, I have to manually switch to my headset. I'll try to setup the profile in the S2 like you mentioned earlier when i have time. Thanks, m8
