I-021: Can 09 TSX tech play DVD/CD MP3?
#2
It should play mp3 CDs but the USB memory stick input makes mp3 CD support pointless. You can get an 8GB stick for $25 or a 16-32GB stick for $50 - $75 on Amazon.com or wherever. That's the same as ten to fourty mp3 CDs worth. Suppose you only like one band and all you need is 1 CD, you could find a 1GB USB memory stick in a dumpster behind Best Buy.

the TSX tech package makes an iPod pointless. I use a pair of 4GB USB sticks on rotation, and I always get fresh music in the car. XM is also very low quality...better than 1st gen TSX, but too much compression artifacts
Yes, it plays MP3s on CD just fine

I've noticed XM sounds poor also. It's more noticably deficient now with the 2G TSX's nice audio system. The low and high response isn't there at all. I can't really enjoy XM music, but I pay for it anyway to get CNN and comedy. Listening to cable news while on the road is a real treat.

XM is horrid, but MP3s sound excellent in the 2nd gen TSX, better than the stock 07 Civic EX headunit (the only other Honda equipment I can compare it with). The mpeg decoder is very good, as it hides the imperfection of the lossy mp3 really well. If you play 192kbps or higher, the MP3s sound as good as CDs

I do have a memory stick. However, I want to group my music and have a faster access to them. If I store them in discs, I can just say "play cd five", and it will play that collection.
So I guess from what people are saying, it can play CD MP3s but not DVD MP3s? Thanks for the info.

I gotta disagree with that one. Browsing through folders is not nearly as convenient as browsing through my iPod.

I was using an mp3 player for a while but I tried out a cheap a memory stick to see hw it worked and promptly ordered a 32GB. The luxury of simply having the music always be in the car without having to bring the mp3 player to and from the car is nice. I like being able to enjoy the benefits of mp3s all the while giving it zero thought. I'll take the cumbersome folder menu over having to remember bringing the mp3 player.

My free XM trial just ran out, and honestly I dont even think its worth renewing because even with the volume at 40 (all the way up), It isnt loud enough and there is like no bass. Dose any one else feel this way? I have the tech package too btw.

I let my XM run out because I found the memory stick to be a lot cleaner as well. 1500 songs on random works great. I will say the Acura XM is better than the Bose XM I have in my Avalanche.
Question, where can you buy the DVD-A CD's? I went into best buy and they looked at me cross eyed. I searched via web and could not find much that way either. Is the DVD-A just a passing fancy? I see that some CD's say 5.1, but is not a DVD-A, will that work for the 5.1 in the tech package car?

By DVD-A CD's i assume you mean DVD-Audio discs which are actually DVD's and not CD's. You probably won't find them in any local retail stores, but I found this cool list on Amazon - "Best DVD-Audio Discs" -

If you use a and let the USB memory device play randomly (shuffle) then there is no need for an iPod in the car, which is what I do.
I wanted to like XM radio because it is integrated with my my TSX tech, but it does sound awful compared to CDs and MP3s. XM radio sounds flat with the volume all the way up, but my MP3s and CDs I listen at volume level 9 to 10.
I have to say XM traffic is very useful to have in the car, and XM weather is a good toy to have and show off, but these two services are too expensive a la carte. I will probably let the 3 XM subscriptions lapse altogether at the end of 3 months free trial.

Does anyone know how to organize the folders off of the memory stick when it is plugged into the car? It seems that the system will organize by the date the folder was downloaded on the stick, instead of alphabetical. I have the folders alphabetised on the stick via the pc, but when I plug it in, I still get the listing in another way. Also, I had to rename all of the folders with the artist name in front of the CD title so it would list the names on the screen.

I am looking to see if anyone has figured this out too. I would like the folders to be alphabetized. It seems to read subfolders at the same level as top level folders so you can't really organize folders by artist like:
U2
Album 1
Track 1...
Album 2
Track 1...
The folder display shows
Album 1
Album 2
...
Maybe if I just didn't have by album and just copied all the MP3s into the root folder of the artist, that might be better.

I don't think so, because I think it has to be self-powered, not using an external power source. I think the manual says not to use a hard drive or connect a USB hub and stuff like that, but haven't tried any of that to test the theory. I have a 16GB USB key which works great and has almost every CD I own on it. Its the ultimate music in a car input.

Ebay has a bigger selection under DVD-Audio - also look up DTS and Dual Disc - both work. SACD's however will not work. I also managed to get a few from CDUniverse.com, buy.com and Acousticsounds.com. Selection is limited and the popular ones are expen$$ive.

Are you 100% certain that SACD won't work?

Oh and I agree that XM sounds horrible. Even FM sounds leaps and bounds better through the ELS system.

I started a thread about this here:
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tsx-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-304/mp3-function-new-tsx-720188/
Basically it's done on the order the FAT filesystem on the USB stick lists them.
To sort alphabetically, get DriveSort for Windows, fatsort for Linux. Not sure about Apple computers.

Dude, thanks so much, this was baffling me for the longest time. I reset every folder and file to the same date thinking then it would sort by name, but didn't so I couldn't figure out how it was sorting. This program worked great and now all my 250+ directories on my 60GB USB drive are sorted alphabetically on the nav screen. Its pretty awesome to have that many songs in the car. Now I wish they would enable a "Favorites" and some other features to the USB drive functions.
