HFL and text messages...

Hi everyone, just picked up a 09 6 speed TSX... LOVE IT!

My only gripe is the HFL. On other cars I've always dialed from my phone and the call has gone straight through... sadly for 09 owner, this doesn't work (I've read many posts about it, unless you have figured out how to get the call to patch through automatically???)

I'm just wondering what's supposed to happen when you get a text message? For me I get no beep, or indication whatsoever. Is that normal? I get a lot of texts and would like to know right away when I get one, rather than having to check at every stop light.

Other than that, I love this car. It's so fun to drive

isnt the whole point of the HFL not to pick up your phone?
Hence, the name Hands Free Link.
PLUS, you have a six speed and you're trying to text and drive and shift and probably eat all at the same time.....

regardless what I or others say, you will still text while driving.
whats so hard at picking up your phone at a stop light? or waiting till you get to your destination to text back?

I don't text and drive. But if I get an important message I will pullover and either call or text back.

My old blueant gives a beep when I get a get a new message... I get nothing out of the HFL.

sound comes from your phone. like my iphone will beep or vibe. hfl only rings for a call. and if you answer using the steering wheel button, it should auto go to hfl. i dial on my iphone and it auto goes to hfl for that too. if yours doesnt, try pressing the hfl button, then saying system setup. or say help. theres an auto transfer setting on my 2010, should be on the 09

From what I read the 2010 model recitified the dialing from your phone and automatic transfer issue.

I listen to my music through BlueTooth, so it makes a noise throughout the entire car when i get a text through my iPhone.

If you're one of the few who have a Windows Phone 7 device, the upcoming Mango update adds the capability for the phone to read your texts aloud and let you reply to texts verbally. I assume this will work through bluetooth, but I haven't had a chance to test it.

When I dial on my phone while connected to the HFL, my phone asks if I want to converse using external speakers (in this case the car).
My gripe is on the occasions I've chosen no, it still somehow ended up on the speaker...
As for texts, turn your phone volume up when you get into your car...

There is no such thing as an important text message that can't wait until you stop.

I work in emergency management and NEVER touch my phone while driving. I have a pager that WILL cause me to find a safe spot to pull over but there is no such thing as an important text. If it is urgent then they'll call you and you can listen on the HFL.

You are obviously too young to remember a time before cell phones and texting, but we actually did survive without answering that "emergency text" from your BBF telling you when to meet in the mall.

BTW, texting while stopped at a red light is also illegal in states that have DD laws.

Hi there Vistokid,
I'm driving an 09 Tech and have my HTC Evo paired. Regretably, there is no notification of text messages from the HFL. I do hear the notification sound from my phone from the phone speaker.

As for the call initiation from Phone -> HFL... if I start a call on my phone, I must quickly access the phone's menu and tell it to transfer to BT Device. It then transfers the audio and the HFL mutes my music and continues the call via HFL. Alternatively, I can use steering wheel HFL buttons and use the voice command 'TRANSFER' to transfer the active call from my cell speaker to the HFL system. Sounds like this differs from the '10 model behavior a bit.

I've got some gripes about how HFL works, but its better than nothin!

Just wanted to provide an update...
Last week, I upgraded my Windows Phone to 7.5 (mango) and now have hands-free texting . You can configure the phone to announce and read texts over a bluetooth and/or wired connection. You can then reply via voice and the phone translates it back to a text message. All hands-off!
