Buzz in HF?

Howdy all. New 2010 TSX Tech here with an odd problem.

The handsfree system is having a hell of a time understanding me - I've made sure all air (ac/heat) is off, no other noise inside, but it takes 2-3 times for it to understand me - 50% of the time.

When I started to add numbers into the phone book I think I discovered the problem - when it repeats back my tags in my voice, there is a horrible buzzing, like a really bad ground loop problem. I'm guessing that's what is causing it to not understand me.

The odd part, however, is that when talking on the phone, there is no buzzing.

The dealer is researching (1 week and counting) but haven't heard anything, so thought I'd send out some feelers here to see if anyone else has had this issue?

Cheers and thanks in advance,
mj

Hey MJ,

When you say there's no buzzing when talking on the phone, do you mean when using the HF to talk on the phone?

I had a few complaints from callers and I, too, noticed when I recorded the voice dial feature that when it repeated it back to me there was some interference or buzzing. I'd be willing to spend some money on a good microphone or insulation for the current mic if that would help.

I also noticed when I moved the phone from the console in front of the CD changer to the center console for storage and charging in the outlet there that I had way fewer complaints about buzzing and interference from callers.

I hope some of the technophiles here take this up as a project. We have a real sharp group of people on this forum.

Interesting.. I've tried with and without charging the phone, no difference.

Again, there is NO problem or buzz with the phone connected via bluetooth to the car's handsfree. The buzz is only noticed when I record a voice tag or try to issue a voice command.

The dealer hasn't called me back in over a week and a half. Very odd.

Latest update...

Took the car back in to service and was given a TL loaner. I Paired my phone to the loaner TL 2009, there was no buzzing in the background for the phone name or phonebook entries. So it's not my phone, for sure. When I got my car back, it still wasn't able to understand HF commands for more than 1/2 the time and the buzzing is there everytime I try to record a name into the phonebook.

It's so bad that I can't save phonebook entries because any new entry is rejected as soundling like a previous one. Worse yet, it cannot understand numbers I speak - 617 1234 is "recognized" as *0# 35 . HF voice command is virtually useless because it takes 2-4 repeats. And when it does recognize a command, 1/2 of the time it's the wrong command.

So back to the shop today, and this time I get a loaner TSX 2010. Paired my phone to the loaner, and BUZZZZZZ... phone name, any entry I try to make ... exactly same problem.

I spoke with the service manager, he claims that Techline does not believe there is a fix and this is "standard" for the car.

REALLY???? What exactly am I supposed to do with this? A big chunk of the Tech package is unusable (HF phone is unusable - I have to pick up my phone and dial manually - illegal in some areas- and the HF voice command is unusable). Is there a dollar compensation I should be seeking? Are other folks with the Tech package having the same issue? Dare I utter the words "CLASS ACTION" now or wait?

I've been a pretty loyal and happy Acura customer - this is my 3rd (04 TSX, 07 RDX, 10 TSX) and this is the first time I've had this kind of a "can't do anything about it" problem. I don't know what to do - contact American Honda, post on every Acura board, or ?? The service manager seemed pretty surprised at the response he got from Techline and all but encouraged me to make a lot of noise in a lot of places about this problem.

Any thoughts, recommendations, or commiseration is welcome.

I have the exact same problem, I’ll say “call home” and it will read back “#8*0”. I have given up trying to store numbers, I hear a lot of noise when it plays back my commands and I believe that this is the problem.

As far as a buzz, I don’t know, I don’t get any complaints and most times my phone is on my belt.

My 06 TSX worked fine, and I agree, this should be fixed, it is mostly a useless feature the way it is now.
I have an 09 tech.

Yup... mine likes #8 * a lot too.

I'm peeved because this wasn't a problem with my old one... wasn't a problem with my RDX... wasn't a problem with the TL... and the Tech package is not exactly a cheap upgrade to have a big chunk "useless" seems like there should be some kind of fix or compensation. At the very least I believe they owe a working handsfree car kit - one that doesn't require manual dialing (any NY or CA folks care to chime in on the importance of that??).

Thanks for helping confirm what I suspected- this is more than a "me" issue!

Cheers,
mj

ya know, i noticed today when adding a tag to an imported phone book entry on my 2010 Tech TSX that there was "buzzing"/interference when the HFL sounded back what I said. uughhh....shouldn't be "standard" for this car. It didn't do that AT ALL on my '06 TSX. i'll be mentioning to the dealer.

is the common across the new TSX's?? there aren't many replies to this thread. maybe it's only impacting some but not all...

I too have heard this with my 09 Tech; HOWEVER, some of my voice tags don't have it, while others do.... so there is come combination of events which result in this happening. A few theories (untested mind you):

- Phone location... perhaps as others have eluded, the phone is emmitting something causing interference with our TSX HFL modules (kinda like the GSM buzz you hear on speakerphones/unshielded lines)

- Is your phone's wifi enabled? How about your phone data connection?

I have the issue too and will play with these variables next opportunity.

FuzzyLabRat: ya know, i too have considered interference from the phone. i moved it to multiple locations within the car; no matter where i put it, i'd get interference. but -- i don't hae any interference at all in the "phone name". i might try putting the phone outside off the car but within bluetooth range. my '06 TSX has ZERO problems whle in the car with interference. no buzzing at all. definitely disappointing ....

I too have the same issue with the buzzing background noise when recording phone tags. I asked the dealer to check it out the last time I had the car in for an oil change and there wasn't anything they could do. It did the same thing with a few different phones they used, and in other TSX cars on the lot. Definitely not a tech feature I brag about.
