advise on speaker replacement - what fits?
Hi All,
I have a Canadian 2010 TSX base 4cyl and I've already added a sub (JL 12W6D4) and Alpine MRP500 mono amp. Sounds great but I'm not thrilled about the highs and mids. I understand that the front is a 6 1/2" speaker. I went to crutchfield to determine what speakers fit on my car without having to enlarge the speaker mounting area on the front door. I am leaning towards Focal Polyglass and according to clutchfield, the 130VR 5.25" 2 way component fits. However, focal Access line 165A1 is a 6.5" speaker but that also fits. It does not select the Focal Polyglass 6.25" version as speaker set that fits our car. Why would this be? Should I go with 5.25". The Polyglass model is a higher model and obviously costs more but will SQ be affected being that I'm putting a smaller woofer?
I plan to leave the stock system. I am currently using the AudioControl LC2i, which takes (tapped) hi-level audio signal from the rear speakers to my subwoofer amp. I will be replacing the AudioControl LC2i with AudioControl LC8i. The LC8i will take the current subwoofer setup and also I will take the front high level speaker signals (mid and tweeter) to feed my new 4 channel amp. From that new 4 channel amp, I plan to run new speaker wirings to the new speakers.
So my questions are:
1. speaker fitment. Why does the 5.25 is being shown as being compatible with our door but not the 6.5" version of the Focal Polyglass, however the 6.5" Access model is compatible.
2. Does anyone think that taking speaker level input from the OEM amp to the AudioControl LC8i and then from there out to my OEM amps will not yield good SQ?
Thanks.

Oops... for question 2, I meant out to my aftermarket amps. It should say...

Hi all,
I'm hoping that there's a member here that has done speaker replacement on a 2010 TSX base. I looking to order my speakers online and not have to buy from a local audio shop here as it could be a significant saving. However, I don't want to be stuck with something that won't fit. Please, if anyone has done a speaker replacement on this car, please let know what speaker model and the result so that I can make an intelligent decision before I make a purchase. Thanks in advance and appreciate any feedback you may have on the setup I'm looking to put in.

Hello there. I have not done the speaker replacement as of yet but I do know Focal speakers pretty well. I have a feeling that the speakers you are more intereseted in that don't fit the car have baskets that are just a little too large. Happens a lot even on smaller drivers. I know there are 5.25 speakers out there that may not fit either. Just because they are wide or thin doesn't mean they aren't or deep.
And what kind of speaker wire do you plan on running? Thinking about some Cardas or Furutech?

Hello Tannis,
Thank you for your response. I have not found any car audio shop here that supplies Focal speakers actually. Most of them have Kickers, Claarion, Alpine or Pioneer but no Focals. If I am to replace the speaker, I definitely want an upgrade so I'm leaning towards higher end such as Focals and from the reviews that I've read. Crutchfields indicates that for this Polyglass model, their 5.25" will fit. Unfortunately, I can't even order from them because I'm in Canada and they don't ship to Canada. They have their Canadian sister, Crutchfield.ca (canadian division), however, they do not even have Focal also listed in their inventory and other known brands. Thus, I'm really stuck on purchasing something from an online store that will ship to Canada. Do you think that Crutchfield.com is accurate in their assessment on what they show on their website fits our car? It does say some minor modification is required but when I spoke to crutchfield.ca on one purchase I made earlier this year and ask what in general does "minor modification" means, the person says that typically it requires some drilling. I also went to metra online http://www.metraonline.com/ to view what fits and it shows our speaker fitment to be 6.5 with 3" depth. So that's my dilemna. I want to do the install myself, not because I want to save some $$$$ but because I don't have any installer that I can trust specially when it comes to tearing down my door and breaking something internally and just not telling me.
For speaker wires, I will definitely do some research on what is best bang for the buck. What do you recommend? I know Cardas and they can be pretty expensive. On my HT and my reference 2 channel stereo, I currently use QED, http://www.qed.co.uk/173/gb/product/...versary-xt.htm
These speaker cables cost me just over 1K just for my front HT speakers (Front and center channel bi-ampedl) but well worth the price as I really heard the difference it made. I won't be spending this kind of $$$ but certainly something that would be appropriate for the car speakers I end up with.
Thanks.
