2009 changing sub.

Hi guys.
I'd like to replace the sub of my car.

I have a box already made with a really good sub, and would like to plug it instead of the stock sub.
would this be ok?

how many ohms does it need to be?
(since its dual coil i can configure it in different ways)

Also. i understand the subs shares the power with the rears speakers.
would the sub get more power if i unplug the rears?

thanks

You would need an amp.
the stock amp will not power your aftermarket sub.

What sub do you have?

usually stock amps dont have to much power. you're asking the stock amp to do more work. it wont be able to handle an aftermarket subwoofer.

well not necessarily.
my sub, has high sensitivity, and although it has high power, it also responds well to low power.

does unpluggin the rears make any difference? do they share the same output as the sub?

okay, i gave my advice. if you think other wise go ahead and try it. unplug your stock sub and plug in your aftermarket.
you didnt give me the name of your sub....you just said low power high power. what are the specs? what is the RMS on the sub? is the sub a DVC? or a SVC? 2ohms 4 ohms?
and then after you dismissed my suggestion, you ask me another question.....

instead of asking, and dismissing...find out for your self.
report back with your findings, sir.

I bet I already know the answer.....

80's is not high sensitivity

You need to give those some power for them to get moving.

i think you're right.
my mistake, i was sure these were in the 90s.
how many watts does the stock amp push to the sub?
PS: i can wire the DVCs as 2ohm, same as stock

I already tried what you're wanting to do, and as others mentioned it's a waste of time without adding an additional amp for the new sub.

Think of it this way, right now, you're getting say 40 watts of power to the factory sub. (that's just a guess used to explain my point). No matter what sub you put in there, it's still only going to get 40 watts because you can't change the output of the amp. Changing the speaker won't affect the output of the amp. If you want more bass, you'll have to get a stronger amp. If you get a stronger amp, you'll need an aftermarket sub.

Trust me, I've been there, done that, found out for myself. I knew it wouldn't be any louder, but I changed the sub out just to see if the sound would be better using an enclosed sub rather than an infinite baffle sub. To be honest, the factory sub sounded better using the factory amp.

On that note, does anyone have recommendations of a good replacement speaker if our factory "sub" goes out? Since aftermarket subs seems to be underpowered as direct swaps, what would be suitable replacements for the factory sub?

If it's anything like the 3rd gen TL...nothing will sound good.
right now, its a free air or infinite baffle.

replacing it with another infinite baffle or free air sub will leave you wanting more.
you're gonna have to go aftermarket with a box and amp combo

The sub power is not shared with any other channels unless you want to consider that all the channels share the same feed from the battery. In any case, if you configure your DVC for 2 ohms the factory amp will work just fine. You are not going to blow out the rear glass but you might find that it will play a little louder then the factory free air setup due to the enclosure and port adding efficiency. You can always add an amp in the future if you need more “bang”.

Both the ELS and Base HU have a separate sub channel; this is different from the 1st gen premium system that used the rears to feed the sub section.

Do you get any rear rattle? Can you share the make and model of the sub you installed?

I'm starting to get the notorious random rattle. When I push on the liner (behind the headrest), the rattle is gone.

yes its a 12" alpine type s and i have it set up at 4ohms.

after 1 day or so i just spliced into the subwoofer output and hooked up a old school punch.

and about the rattle, i think its the quick clips that clip the liner in place, i am going to figure out a solution to this. one quick thought was removing the rear liner and adding cotton in between

For those wwho added an aftermarket amp where did you get input signal for the amp. Would it be OK to just tap into the factory sub wires and put them right into the high level inputs into the amp? Figured I'd do that but was wondering if that would be to much power to input

i dont think so but it better if you use the the converter, Walmart sales them for 20$$ and its a 4 channel so you can hook your sub and your rear speakers.

So replacing the stock sub with an aftermarket free air and aftmkt amp wasn't any better than stock??
