Why would someone buy the ILX vs. the TSX?

I don't get it. The ILX is finally up on the Acura.com build and price, and a base ILX with the premium package is priced only very slightly less than a base TSX. The only feature that I can think of in the ILX's favor is the pushbutton start.
I haven't had the chance to sit (or obviously drive) the ILX but the TSX has a lot more HP, more room, etc.

Some prefer smaller cars, and others might want a better power/weight ratio with the 2.4/6MT configuration, which I'm curious about. On the whole, though, it doesn't seem like a compelling package.
With a little more power and a good 6AT, the base model would make a lot more sense.

looking at just the car itself (outside of price):
some want MPGs and don't care about power or performance
some want a smaller car that looks nice
some want the new look and few of the bells and whistles
some want the new look with honda tech
coming from an enthusiasts point of view of course we all sit back and go "huh?" where's the fun in the ILX?? where's the performance??
the mainstream folks won't have a clue about engines, HP, performance type things...why? they just want a reliable car that looks nice with all the creature comforts and then some (that entry level luxury) that would not otherwise be had say...in a civic. and are people willing to pay? i'm sure they will and we'll find out as the months roll by if the ILX is a success or an utter FAIL by Acura.
very few if any of us on this site would pay $30k for the ILX...if it had a bigger engine with more horsies and more "performance" then maybe...personally the ILX is too small for my tastes andat $30K...uh, hell no. i know how much i paid for my TL brand new, and it makes me see that i got a lot car for what i paid for (of course this was back in 2005).

Got to drive the new ILX (2.0 Tech Package) this weekend. Wasn't too bad, but I can't say that it rode/drove any better than my 2011 Jetta. I then drove a TSX right after....wow...night and day difference in ride quality and comfort. For about the same money, I can't imagine that the ILX is going to chew into TSX sales too much. Driving the TSX was probably a mistake....I pick up my new TSX tonight

I read somewhere in the forum, that maybe they will keep both models, to see which one does better with sales.... who knows. But if you think about it... BMW has a 1-series, 3-series, and 5-series... maybe they will just keep the TSX and the ILX... I just got my TSX in March and I love it...
I wonder if the ILX is the same size as the last Integra 4-door?
We shall see how well this new model does.... maybe Acura has something else up their sleeve.... I thought they would have come out with a luxury sport coupe to compete with the G37 coupe... but I guess not.... they should bring back the CL.. that car was hot.

i got my 6mt SE tsx for about the same price as MSRP for the ILX 2.4.....while the ILX may have the text readouts, the fact that its not for iphones is useless for me, plus the ILX lacks a memory driver seat and 60/40 rear seat (i think), both things the TSX has that is more useful than the texts feature. the SE goodies are just icing on the cake.
so in my opinion, the ILX is not worth it. the tsx being japan made is also a bonus

I question what they expect to compete against besides the CT200h. GTI, Mazda 3 Grand Touring, upcoming Volvo V40, future small Infiniti maybe? If the 2.0 got close to the Civic's fuel economy I could understand that aspect, but it's not even "miserly". They should really make a CNG version though. Most people I know that would spend the extra $7000 for a home filling station (PHIL) would prefer the Acura niceties.
Essentially, the reason for this is to get younger people into the brand for around $25,000 and well equipped under the magic $30k mark. So many people have wanted the RSX back which was an overpriced Civic that also had a moderate 2.0. Given that, I'd say Acura has merely listened to the crying and responded with this. The TSX was essentially the replacement to the Integra sedan but moved upscale. This is a more true of a "new" Integra sedan, so can we get a Euro-Civic hatchback brought over as an RSX?

plus the 6MT ILX is NOT offered with tech. WTH?
i was never overly impressed with a 4 cyl TSX when i drove them as loaners. they were peppy and all, but i guess i'm used to V6 power.

To me, it's all about the demographic... I see the ILX as catering to the younger, tech-savvy market who may see the TSX as being a bit more "mature" for their liking.
I'd like to think they'll keep the TSX around for a while--maybe even let it see a new model/refresh.

Put it aside, this has been known for a while, ILX will be the entry level, replacing the TSX. Possibly, the TSX and TL combine to make the new TLX.
TSX owners should step up to the TLX.
Again, having a new ILX released which considers a down-grade, I treasure my TSX much more, I don't know why people whining about it. Don't know if they plan to buy a ILX in near future or not.

6MT is only offered with the TSX Special Edition with NO tech. I was not inpressed with the loaner tsx either. That also goes for the TL. I prefer manual transmission. Owned turbo, v6 vehicles previously. I hope to test drive a MT ILX to make a opinión. It does have a back-up camera

i'm 25.
if I were in the market to buy a vehicle today, lol it wouldnt be the ILX.
what market/demographic are they trying to reach?
any one younger than I, wouldnt be able to afford a $30k car.
and if they could, there are so many better choices available.
I thought the TSX was the car to be in if you're trying to say.."hey, I made it."

Uh....hardly. This coming from someone who has now owned three TSXs. I like them for being decent cars that are inexpensive to lease, but most certainly not as anything remotely resembling a status symbol of any kind.

The ILX I say in the other day at the dealership just lacked the same visual pop I got when I went and sat in the new Ford Focus or Hyundai Veloster. Both of those cars are targeted at similar young buyers, but offer interiors that are way more visually arresting and fun. Hell, even the new Volvo S60, which is in a similar price range, has a much nicer and more distinctive interior layout. Acura needs to seriously rethink how they are approaching their interiors and really step up their game if they want to continue to remain competitive on something other than value.

It's odd because typically car manufacturers release their flagship first and everything else is a trickle-down of that model in order to entice buyers with the "you're buying a baby flagship" mentality. For example the release of the BMW 7er, then the 5, then the 3. Each model retaining some of the design precedence set with the 7, but in its own iteration to keep each level distinct from one another.
With Acura releasing the ILX first it seems like the mentality will be - ok... so it gets better, right? I guess let's wait and see what the TLX is like? Then the RLX?? (I realize that the same buyer won't be looking at all 3 as viable options, but still.) It seems like the ILX would be an easier pill to swallow if the TSX were off the market and there weren't any other options whatsoever. Then the ILX could simply be viewed as a baby RLX and nothing more.
It seems like they're trying to attract buyers that have not previously looked at Acura before as an option. In doing so, they're alienating their core Acura buyers - previously the only demographic that would buy an Acura.

I haven't been on the forum's here since 2007. I've owned a 2001 MDX, then a 2006 TSX and just yesterday picked up a 2012 TSX w/o navigation. I test drove the iLX and frankly, I probably would have purchased it if the dealer was willing to negotiate. They had 2 in stock and I went looking for the TSX, but wanted to give the ILX a try so I drove one. Here are my first impressions. It's a lot peppier than I expected. Even with 50 less horses, I actually thought it felt more powerful than the TSX. The interior was beautiful arranged. They've curved the dashboard to make it feel like there was more interior room. The controls we're updated and very nicely laid out and understandable. The back seat offered the same amount of legroom (seems weird because the car is smaller) as the TSX, and the trunk was smaller too but not much. Overall, the car felt a more modern than the TSX with the materials feeling newer and updated. The ride was not as soft as the TSX, but the handling was better just slightly. The exterior was nicely styled and I don't have a preference to whether I like the TSX or iLX better. The problem for me was the price. Without nav, the 2.0 auto with 150Hp was 30,300. The TSX without nav was 30,900. I paid 29300 for my TSX. The iLX was not worth 30,300 to me compared to the TSX. Even through the iLX felt newer and more updated, the TSX felt worth the money for me. Would I have purchased the iLX for $1000 less. Not sure. Maybe. I did like the car very much, but I am loving my TSX (after only 2 days). To me, acura missed a huge opportunity to place the iLX at around 27K, update the TSX and keep it in the 30, 31K range, or add AWD and charge an extra 3-4K for that option. The TL can stay where it is and RL (or whatever) can sit at the high end. For what it's worth I did sit in the new RDX and what I nice job Acura did on that car. It's overpriced but it was nice. A few more things on the iLX- there is no passenger seat automatic controls, only manual only. Also, the car had been at the lot for a week and they had not sold one, but many had tested it. Funny enough, I didn't see the GEN -Y's roaming around the dealership this weekend looking for the car (it was crowded), it was mostly middle aged males looking and driving it.

Nice write-up acura452. It seems that ILX is a decent enough offering at a huge cost disadvantage when shopped against TSX. The fact that the strong yen in Japan dings profitability on Japanese built machines makes me believe that this situation is temporary. ILX is manufactured in Greensburg, Indiana and TSX in Japan. Once Acura shakes out the sedan line perhaps the ILX will be better positioned to compete against other manufacture's offerings instead of its own.
