What should I pay for a 2012 TSX?

I know this can be a loaded question and there are a lot of factors, but looking for an idea. I went to the local dealer looking at a 2012 TSX w/ tech package, MSRP right at $34,000.

Started talking business a bit but expressed that I was not looking to buy today, best price he came up with was $33-something. I didn't catch the last part, because as soon as I heard "thirty three" my brain stopped listening, since under $1,000 off MSRP for a 2012 model year car this late in 2012 seemed way too high. I know there's low allocations and the yen is strong and all that, but I still think given all those factors that seems way too high. I was hoping more for 31 or 32. Was I correct in my thinking or is somewhere in the 33s really a fair price for the car? Thanks

i think like 31.5-32.5 would be a fair price.

cuz when i bought mine. i paid 31.2 in december with chrome stockies cuz that manager just gave into our negotiation skills lol.

i bought it in 2010 at the end of 2010. (mines a 2010 tech)

Yea, that price is high. I paid $31,688 before TTL and accessories for a 2012 back in August.

I have the same question as mrstak, where are you at? If you're in my area my dealer would probably give you a better price too, my family has bought 3 cars from them and they've always been fair with prices to us.

Edit: Forgot to mention, they were willing to find the car I wanted, no matter what. They actually brought my car in from across the state to get me just what I wanted. I had to wait about a week because of that, but I also didn't have to compromise on features and colors.

$USD's .....

Sorry. Seriously though, paid $30,650 for a 2012 6MT SE. Only one in CBP in 12 states. It was exactly what I was looking for.

We just bought one a month ago....

used 2012 5AT Belanova White Pearl
Tech Package
4000 Miles on it

31,600 after taxes and fees (29.5ish before). A brand new base is 31k + taxes here. 4000mi is pretty new, I just look at it like I got the tech pack thrown in free.

I spent about 5 months of hardcore looking and comparing. Not sure what part of the States you are from, but from my extensive comparisons I conclude that Illinois is one of the best states to buy in. The Chicago and surrounding metros have the most dealerships per capita in the nation.

Where I'm from, all the dealers say they are a one price dealership, and most of them say that. Like its a mutual agreement to screw the buyer. I can't get any more than 500 off the sticker and for conditions not up to par. Down there when I talk money, they are ready to start dealing. Its like they are already expecting that you want it for much less than sticker price.

My advise is to try to buy in a big and busy market. Illinois for sure and I will guess also Kansas City or the Missouri metros too because I also saw lots of aggressive pricing on some nice ones. I would start at the highest local Kbb value and work from there. And remember you can always at least get away paying the sticker price out the door but you can save much more.

Sorry for the walls of text.

All the dealerships? I thought that was normal its kinda like McDonald's except its dealerships. Can you give him/me negotiating skills, would be much appreciated.

It depends on the market. For example, I am from the Twin Cities, and in this market most of the dealerships, when I say dealership I mean Factory dealerships as in Acura, Ford, etc. Seems they have a pact to call themselves a "one price" dealership. Which is another way of saying "we don't negotiate", in that case they probably would go about 500 lower tops. The private places are much more flexible.

I didn't feel like any of the places around me was willing to work the price down enough for my purchase. That was why we drove 300+ miles away. I can't give any advise how to deal with those type of places. I can however give you some tips with the more flexible sellers.

If I may, what state are you from? Or where is next big metro near you?

Also I forgot to ask if you were interested in used or new?

I am not sure how I could cram everything I read and learned and put it in a nutshell w/o babbling. In short I can not teach you/him how to negotiate but I can outline and emphasis a few key pointers to negotiate with.

[Certified]
I believe the majority of certified cars are not up to the standard of what KBB describes to be qualified as one. Maybe under the hood possibly but cosmetically they aren't but they still carry the Certified title and price tag. A real certified car should at least have a body with no defects besides everyday wear and tear like tiny chips on front bumper. Any manmade damages or repairs should disqualify it from Certified. Nevertheless, Certified is good bc it extends the warranty of the car.

[Condition]
KBB has 4 grades of condition. Excellent, Very Good, Good, & Fair. Only 3% of cars reviewed ever fall in the Excellent condition and 23%, 54%, 18% for the rest respectively just to give you an idea. These are for Private Party cars. There are also CPO(Certified Pre Owned) and Suggested retail values, these values are defaulted as Excellent. They are saying cars they sell (certified or not) are in Excellent condition. We know this is not true

I would go to KBB and get an idea of how they grade each value level. This will help you not to determine how much the car is actually worth, but good as a guideline to help you figure out if the price is too high for the condition it is in, and helps you develop your own grading system, to have an idea of the price range of a specific condition, give or take pending on other things.

Example: Certified TSX 2010 38k mi $23,000

KBB values for this spec:

CPO: 22,861
Retail: 22,441
Private Excellent: 20,411
Private VG: 19,811
Private Good: 19,211

For me to pay 23k for it the car better be in almost mint condition and I would have to have trouble finding anything wrong with it. Playing the numbers I will say that won't be the case. If I can find anything more than whats qualified to be Certified or even Excellent condition, like repainted / repaired bumpers or similar defects, or any dents visible from 1-2ft away I will value it as no better than Private VG (or even Private Excellent if feeling generous).

The way I approach is, I will value this at Private Excellent 20,411 assuming everything is perfect for its spec. As I find defects, damages, or anything that is in worst condition than normal wear for the age of this car, I will deduct from that value. You should almost always be able to get away with the Private Excellent valued price. That is the most I would pay for a used car. You should also be able to at least get that sticker price out the door. So assuming taxes and fees is about $2000 give or take. In this case 23,000-2000=21,000. So 20,411-21,000 is the absolute max I would pay maybe less depending how everything else is after seeing in person.

I will add some more later. I have to get back to work lol.

The one thing you don't want to do is say you are not looking to buy now. Otherwise they will not prioritize that sale and they will be thinking more about their next sale. Once they know you are ready to buy now they will be more willing to finish off this potential sale.

I thought we got a good deal. 2012 used mint 4k mi tsx tech pack with some mats for 28ish, 30,600 after all taxes and junk. You guys don't think that is a good deal?

$29,900 for a Sport Wagon with Tech here in Metro-DC area MD.

Also, 0.9% financing or 2.64% lease options. Very good time to buy (or lease).
Acura is offering $1,000 cash back, so that would be the reason for the low prices. I had at least three local dealers trying to get my business and all around this price.

When you guys say you got your car for X amount, it does us no good unless you tell us if all taxes and fees were included in that price.
