As you have undoubtedly seen, Japan has suffered an 8.9 magnitude earthquake off of the northeast coast. The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami which has resulted in staggering damage and loss of life. Reports are coming in that several automakers have closed factories and other facilities and Honda is included.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that 4 Honda plants were affected by the earthquake, including their R&D operations in Tochigi:
The earthquake did severe damage to Honda operations in Tochagi(sic), Japan, where the company has an assembly plant and research and development center. One employee died when a cafeteria wall caved in, and 30 employees were injured in various parts of the plant, said Ron Lietzke, Honda's spokesman in Ohio.
In addition to the Tochagi(sic) plant, three other Honda plants are temporarily closed.
According to Automotive News, in addition to the Tochigi R&D Center, Honda has shut down the Sayama and Suzuka plants in the wake of this disaster. Honda currently exports the Fit, CR-V, Accord, Acura RL, and Acura TSX models from Japan to the USA.
Here at the TOV we are praying for the safety and well being of all residents and Honda Associates in the impacted areas.

Truly devastating.. Hope the Japanese people can recover quickly from this disaster.
For your information, Sayama is where they manufacture Accord and TSX.
Here's a photo from the net on one of the port handling cars. Looks like Nissan 370Z or something.

Dude...that pic of all the cars strewn on top of each other looks crazy...like they're toy Hot Wheel cars.
I guess if you want a new TSX you're gonna have to wait a while or possibly pay a higher price due to the limited supply now.
Who knows how long it'll take for Honda to start making and shipping TSXes again. DANG.

There are a number of issues need to be resolved before Honda can reopen their factories.
1) Ensure the factories has no structural damage.
2) The parts supplier can continue to bring parts in for the factory to run.
3) Workers can make it to work
4) Transportation infrastructure is operational, ports open to bring in raw material (steel) and rail to transport material/finished products back and forth.
5) Power- as they have to shut down a nuclear power plant due to overheating concern.

I feel terrible for Japan. I also feel glad I have my TSX for 10 days now. Also, regarding the nuclear plant - just saw on CNN.COM that there is radiation leaking. Readings are 1000 times normal (not sure how high it needs to go before it is a hazard).

Maybe this is a wake up call that we need the same technology that gave Japan a 30 second warning.
It's not like anyone here could use the work, right?
I know, I know; if some politician here can't make some under the table money and get a 3rd summer home. It will not get done, Sorry I thought I was in America of 40 years ago for a minute when we ruled technology.

Dude Godzilla was trending on twitter yesterday. I understand where people the humor, but right now people are suffering in terrible conditions. This could easily been the west coast of the US. We should start a donation fundraising on Azine like they did on Christmas. After all most the cars on this forum are made in Japan. Just a suggestion

Boy they really got slammed, the nuclear plants are really messed up. I guess that will be the new reason why we don't build any new ones here.
I was thinking, I'm starting to see a lot of donate banners for Japan on the web. That got me thinking this is one of the richest country's in the world, very different from Haiti.
Don't we donate ever day by buying cars and most of our electronics from them?

^Even the richest and most powerful nation on earth needs help when disaster strikes, just remember what the rest of the world did after 9/11 and Katrina.
Japan needs a lot of help in rescue and recovery as well as rebuilding.
We do need to be careful as a lot of bogus charity spring up afterwards seeking donations .

Yes it will, since its made in Japan. Its ironic cause Acura were plannin to move production of the wagon to the US, since they had a hard time setting up the factory for the higher volume of cars. Thats what my salesman told me back when the wagon was delayed forever. Honestly, expect a delay in many Japanese goods, because the more important priority for everyone in the world is to get Japan back on its feet, and rebuild.

The plants are, for the most part, fine. The nuclear plants in Japan are all water-cooled as opposed to graphite cooled (Chernobyl). However, there is no electricity and therefore no running water. Steam was building in one of the tanks and would have eventually caused a massive explosion, so workers manually released a harmless amount of radiation.
OT: My TSX just got that much more rare. Resale spiking through the roof.
Peace+Love to the people of Japan and all of those affected.

First, my prayers to Japan.
Second, this talk about the TSX becoming more rare and resale going up is nonsense.
If I had to bet the farm, I would say that TSX/Euro Accord production will be back to pre-quake levels within 30 days max. According to the link below, Honda says they are planning to suspend operations at Sayama for March 15-20. It's not like it'll be stopped for 6 months, not even close!
They plan for these sorts of things. It's not like the plant was leveled. They might have to replace/recalibrate some equipment and spend a couple weeks doing test builds, but that's about it. No need to over-dramatize this.
