Tinting. Is it worth it?
Tinting. Is it worth it?
So I'm thinking about tinting my car, and I know most people here already tint their cars with 35% or darker, but my main reason I would tint my car would be for UV protection and just overall keeping the heat out of the inside as much as possible.
I do not care for the dark look or blocking people from looking inside. I guess I prefer function over form.
Now, I know the car comes with a factory tint and I was wondering whether the factory tint has good enough UV/heat protection?
'Cause if it does then I would just leave it like that, save money, and not opt for a 50% overall tint.
Thanks for your input.
p.s. I am in CA, so pretty much any tint on the front window will be illegal, but I think 50% will be light enough that it won't be noticeable.

Yes it's worth it.
3M makes a product that has very little "tint" to it, and still does the UV and heat protection of a darker tint.

I have 35 on thefront 2 windows, an 20 on the back three. I think it's perfect and worth every Penny. Legal limit for the front is pretty much nothing, but no cops seem to mind. If you ever get pulled over with tint though, roll down all 4 windows and turn off the car. Cops appreciate that. I feel like gettin 50% tint is kinda pointless though. Just too light

Actually I'm getting one of my cars tinted this weekend. Yes after like 1983 most cars have some kind of factory tint.
The guy at the tint shop took a reading on my daughters 2003 Maxima and my wife's 2010 TL and the machine read 73%.
So I think I am going with the 40% as with that plus the factory tint it would be 33% give or take a few %'s.
Yes I agree with you about going dark. i think it looks to cheap and it does create a safety issue when driving.

i got this tint done on my car and it's better to have it than not here in socal. i did 35% on the rears and 25% on the fronts. On these more warmer days, i remember my car being much hotter without the tints
When getting tints done, i would suggest in getting the 3M or above. If you've got some money to spend and blocking the heat is a great deal of your concern, there's what's called a ceramic tint. Does the job way better than your normal tint
If you live in SoCal, I really recommend tinting your car. I've done it with mine and it significantly cuts down on heat and UV rays (ceramic tint).
I left the windshield untinted. For that I use a sunshade.

Problem I've encountered over the years with tinting is -- I've NEVER been able to find a tint shop that can apply tint without bubbles (lint or dirt trapped between tint & glass). Can anyone recommend an excellent tint shop in the Columbia, Maryland area?
Also, why the hell does the government allow all SUV's & vans to come off the assembly line with factory-tinted rear window & rear side glass? Why not allow sedans & wagons the same?

IMO, I don't think it's worth it. Factory tint keeps UV out and also has a light coating for heat resistant glass. I do live in Vancouver where temperatures are cooler, so I'm not too concerned about heat. Plus I think tint only looks good on certain exterior colours.
Next time come up with a better lie.
I never tinted my car when I lived in So Cal but when I moved to Houston it is a matter of survival. I used huper Optic Ceramic and it is great. After almost 5 years in the TX sun it is still holding up well and the ceramic vice metallic does not intefere with the GPS receiver or antenna in the rear window. Pricey but worth it. I also have weathertech sun visors on the side windows. I can keep the windows cracked to let some air circulate. The heat also is an enemy of car interiors.
I say yes 2 tint. Check this out.

I paid $235 for all my windows (TSX Wagon) and $100 for my front windshield.
