Slightly rough idle - cured and an FYI
Slightly rough idle - cured and an FYI
My new to me, 2013 4 cylinder, has 46K miles. It was very well maintained. Had regular oil changes, one-owner, and is mint. It has been running a little rough at idle. You can feel a little too much vibration in the steering wheel when at a red light etc.
Assuming it was due to the car sitting on the Acura lot for a few months, on sale, or that the prior owner ran some crappy gas, I gave the car Techron in the fuel. Idle improved 10%.
Today I cleaned the MAF, and the idle improved another 30%.
I then opened the air intake, and opened the Throttle Body. It had, "The black lung, pop" ala Zoolander; cleaning out the Throttle Body with proper spray, and a long, 18" brush, then a rag for clean-up...this enabled my idle to become butter smooth.
I replaced the PCV Valve, as the condition of the Throttle Body, hinted the system ran/runs a little dirty. Replacing the PCV took all of 5 minutes. The old one seemed fine, still rattled freely, but for $15.00, an easy task and preventative maintenance.
Curious, and looking for a baseline, I removed and replaced all 4 spark plugs. I was able to get the NGK's on ebay for $8.00 each, an easy job.
Dropped in a new K&N air filter.
Drained and replaced 3 quarts of Tranny Fluid.
The car idles at rest, like Donald Trump's hair. The takeaway is, at less than 50K miles, cleaning the MAF, and more importantly, the Throttle Body, is something to-do once a year.
Put 2 new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ on the front yesterday, my 4 Brembo blanks arrived, my rear StopTech Street Pads arrive next week, as do the Centric Semi-Metallic front pads (I like semi-metallic for big bite and don't mind the dust). I'll do the brakes next weekend and flush out all brake fluid (I am sure it's original and it should be flushed every 2 years).
Lastly, 20% tint in a few weeks time.
Above is my list. Clean your throttle body and MAF.
