Shocked! Daughter doesn't want my 2010 TSX

The plan has always been to save this car for both my kids to teach them how to drive stick. It's got less than 50,000 miles on it, garaged almost its entire life, runs great, and rattle free.
Last night my daughter says "by the way Dad I don't think I want that as my car when I turn 16". I told her it was up to her and if she wanted something else it would be her responsibility to purchase and insure. So then I go to my 14 year old son and I say your sister doesn't want this as her 1st car what about you? He responded you should sell it. So neither of my kids has any interest in what would basically be a free car for them. WOW!

I have a 96 Ford 150, a 2019 G70, and a 99 Yamaha R6 and my wife has a 15 Pilot so we really don't need this car.

Looking a the bright side I suppose I can sell it and put that money towards a used S2000 which I've always wanted.

Put it in writing and get them to sign it. Take pictures of them with the car and the refusal contract and sell the car. Then shove it directly into their faces when they come back with their minds changed.

I fail to understand why the dad is offering a "free" car. If the first one does accept, what will be offered to the other kid?
Something is missing in this scenario and I suspect not the kids.
I have to ask: What are their reasons? Maybe it is dad forcing them to drive a "stick". Once they learn (or already have learned) how an 8 - 10 speed automatic works, they'll wonder why they ever got a manual.

For comparison, while growing up, IF I was lucky, I was allowed to use the beat-up Ford AEROSTAR minivan. It was that or take the bus. I was beyond happy to be in the minivan.

Are they nervous about driving a manual? If they can overcome that with practice first on an automatic, then this is a near perfect car for a new driver. Safe, reliable and with a back-up camera.

I intentionally learned how to drive a stick on my friend's 82 Celica (not a Supra) and my cousin's 79 Camaro RS. Been driving/owned a stick since 88, but today it is affectionately knows as a millennial anti-theft device.

My kids aren't interested in my 2010 TSX either. The older one (20) isn't interested in car ownership at all, and the younger (17) likes cars and enjoys driving, but is put off by the manual transmission. I'm slightly annoyed by that, but to be fair, we live in downtown Philly, which presents many challenges that a manual transmission could magnify for new drivers. I think she'll get there eventually, and my plan has been to get her proficient with a manual on the TSX before replacing it with a Civic Si.

I have had numerous manual shift vehicles and still own several. My daily driver, however, is the 2019 Acura RDX (Advance) and I find that the 10-speed trans to be very enjoyable to use. I have never used the paddle shifters as I don't see a real need for them since I have the Integrated Dynamic System (comfort/sport/sport+/snow) for performance backup if preferred (or needed). Once kids find out how some of this 'computerized driving' works it's --- "Who needs manual shifting"

Sure, "three on the column stick" or "four on the floor" were fun for many of us and some have not had a choice but kids just do not see any advantage in such things and I can fully understand that. In addition, there is a trend towards younger generations not even preferring to drive at all.
"Like, Dad, why do you have to do that, wait, i got to, like, answer my phone".

Last March my friend bought my 2010 with 165K on it for his 17 yr old daughter. Their son is now learning to drive on it. They love it and were grateful their parents bought them a car.
I begged to drive my brothers 1980 Omni growing up with only one car in the family and 3 drivers.

Probably they don't want it because it's stick. Otherwise they are making a terrible decision. My sister wanted my wagon when I got it. It's been a few years and I got a new car. She still wants it. It's an auto so nothing hard.

There has long been speculation that in the future, vehicle ownership may fall out of favor with ride share service popularity combined with the advent of self-driving vehicles. Never mind driving a manual transmission car, even.

It makes a lot of sense for some people to forego car ownership. I couldn't do it though. I'll be that old man clinging onto my manual transmission internal combustion engine vehicle while most people around me have an EV.

That's the main reason I'm not even LOOKING at Tesla...great performance but one day we will have electric or ride share shoved down our throats...
I want to be able to drive a normal car and a manual for as long as possible.

Yeah man. I honestly feel a bit retarded even saying this, but no matter how good Teslas or EVs get, I am going to hold out as long as I can and stick with ICE.

Yes, I have driven them. Yes, I like them, am impressed, and acknowledge that they are relatively good values. No, I will not buy one.

Try to persuade them with what the car is, and whit it means.

If that doesn't work call a therapist, either for ypur kids or yourself...

Or get the S2K and oh baby, they'll be trying to get that from you, I'm sure!

And if they don't, buy them each a 1996 Geo Metro since that's a car for non car people! They'll learn fast! The 3 Cyl auto, I mean!

Not surprised honestly, but I'm coming from a place of recent experience: I have 3 boys between the age of 17 and 22, my daughter is 15 and I'm currently teaching her to drive. The current generation, as a general rule, bears NO RESEMBLANCE to your views on driving, cool cars, stick vs. automatic, etc. I was befuddled for years, but have come to understand that technology changes have massively shaped their views on transportation - namely smart phones, ride sharing, and autonomous vehicles. Why would they ever want to drive themselves anywhere when their friends are at their fingertips 24/7, or mom/dad will take them wherever they want to go, or they can summon a rideshare, or looking down the road a few years - most cars will be doing the driving for them? I honestly believe that the majority of kids being born in 2020 will likely not ever own a car as most of us know them today. "Drive it yourself" cars will become a collectible or hobbyist niche. So given that world view - an old dude like myself screaming at them "why don't you want to get your license? Why won't you take this manual tranny car I'm offering you?" would be on par with my dad screaming at me "why don't you want to follow in my footsteps as a typewriter and VHS player repairman?". It just doesn't compute for them.

Only my youngest son, of all 4 kids, has ever been eager to get his license and thinks my cars are cool. He was very excited when I got him a high mileage Accord Coupe with a stick shift, and he does bug me from time to time to borrow the TSX Wagon. He REALLY was obsessed with my 2004 BMW M3 Coupe (6MT) before I sold it, but obviously I was never going to let a 16 year old near that! So there are still SOME kids who would think your TSX is cool. I just think they're increasingly a minority.

All that said, I have a daughter too... And I don't believe, nor do I think your daughter believes you when you say "if she wanted something else it would be her responsibility to purchase and insure." She's your little princess, and if she's anything like mine, you're probably going to get her what she wants, in the end. Yeah, yeah - to all the old grumps, "Kids these days", "no appreciation", "they're all so entitled", and I agree. But the LAST thing you want as a parent of kids who are about to "age out" of needing to live at home, is for them NOT TO BE ABLE TO LEAVE! They'll need a car to work, to go to college, and in general to get by in the U.S. (unless you live in an urban area with GREAT public transport). So until self driving cars are the mainstream or Elon perfects and fully deploys his hyperloop technology, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO FORCE THESE SUPER UNCOOL CARS DOWN THEIR THROATS.

I guess it's worth mentioning, Eric The Car Guy recently taught his 16 year old son to drive a stick. About a year ago, no interest in cars, now he can't wait to hop in Eric's Teggy GSR or TypeR and row the gears... I found that story interesting... It's somewhat about exposere I think...

For instance, where I work, my coworkers love cars. Most of them are 17-25... They can't wait to mod something.. Especially when I worked in Mississippi.

One guy said his dream is to own a GTR. I worked with a girl in her early 20's dying to get a 350Z, and I think she wanted a stick. Another guy I worked with that is 20 or 21 sold his bike and got a 2000 Camaro with about 78K miles. V6 auto. Paid $1200 for it.

He's had to do a few things but it's in great shape. He wants to do a muffler delete then do a bunch of burnouts. There's hope for our younger generation.

My neices drive Jr. Drag Racing and all. Ages 12 and 6.

Either way... Interesting topic!

I couldn't agree more...
my fiancee's oldest daughter can get her learner's and isn't interested...I think she's either nervous or she knows the infinite trips to the grocery and to run her siblings around that would ensue.
She might be a genius...

her 12 year old daughter would drive the 2004 Yukon I used to have TODAY if it were legal.

her 9 year old loves most of my cars and will be into cars like me and his Dad...

my 4 year old has no choice...
she has been driving stick since she was like 1...
she's 4 now and last month my Dad had her in my dual clutch S4 and he said do you like
Daddy's car? She was like yes but I only drive stick shift...

Nice S2000! I've been shopping for one of those since the day I sold my M3 - have been without a stickshift since then. Although I do occasionally commandeer my son's manual Accord Coupe from time to time.

Agree with Midnight's comments and yours that a lot of it is about exposure. If they've been immersed in the "fun" surrounding cars, some will latch onto it. Small sample size, but statistically speaking only 25% of my kids have done so. My oldest is getting more interested as he's gotten older too - he said the M3 I had was his dreamcar every since Need for Speed put one into one of their games. They get their inspiration from different places obviously Interestingly enough - my other favorite hobby is mountain biking. I've purchased bikes for my kids over the years and taken them all out on fun beginner trails, and again only 1 in 4 ever caught the fever; just so happened to be the same kid that likes cars.

Sorry to bump this! But I am part of that minority and happy to be!

I can't believe the way some people my age act about cars. Some of them (like me) are into cars but for others immediately after learning how to drive it's only A to B and if it's a status symbol of not. I was looking for a car to purchase months back and wanted to make a sensible but slightly fun decision.

With my own money I earned I decided to purchase a '11 TSX 2.4 Tech 5AT half a year ago and I seriously love it to this day. It was between that and a seen-better-days APR tuned GTI, but I felt the TSX was the slightly more resposible decision with half the annual maintenance cost, miles just above 100k and very well taken care of.

Everything about the TSX is pretty much spot on: the reliability, the performance, the usability, the technology, the stereo system with the subwoofer, and even the sound of the stock exhaust. I annoy everyone else my age in the car since I always drive it in manual mode (I did want to get a 6MT but couldn't find one) since I like to pretend I am driving a manual and revmatch when I downshift. Looks like I've already worn down the transmission a bit, oops. Otherwise I baby it, doing monthly maintenance and always washing it carefully, shining up the wheels, keeping the interior very prestine and cleaning the leather.

I've put yellow fogs on as my first mod and probably won't do anything else. I want to get some coilovers, rims and an intake but also want to keep the value of it up.

Keep in mind, coil-overs, huge rims, and intakes will, in many (most?) cases drop the value of your car. When I shop, if I see so much as a K&N, I walk.

Congratulations!!!! We need some new faces around here!

What color is it? Post a pic!

Unless your selling it soon don't worry too much about resale value, just love the car.

If you want an intake just remove the intake resonator... It's right under the battery. Easy DIY and is 100% reversible!

Same for wheels... Just keep the stockies!

Get some nicer Honda or Acura wheels... Maybe A-Specs or Accord Sport wheels or something! Keep it OEM like!

Just a thought!

You sounded WAY older than 16 until you mentioned 2014, fallowed by "all my life"...

I just realized I'm 7 years older than you. Now I'm depressed... LOL!

Your point is 100% valid though! His kids are indeed crazy and I still know a lot of young car guys!

Any tentative plans on taking his TSX?

A 2012 and a 6MT. That's a gem right there.

Gotta have think skin!

LOL but seriously.
