Q: Friend talks a lot of s**t...
So my friend has been talking a lot of shit lately saying that his 2008 4 door, Civic SI can beat my 2009 AT TSX. I was wondering if it's a fact? If it's not true, then I'm gonna go race him just to shut him up. I'm really just getting fed up on how he's just throwing everything at my face and I'm pretty much not a person that gets fed up very easily.. Just some pointers or some words of advice yah?

Street racing is never a good idea. If you must, go to your local race track, they can usually do a 0-60 and 1/4 mile timing for you. At least they usually have safety training and equipment nearby.
The Civic Si is 500lbs lighter than the TSX, hp is about the same, torque however is 139lb/ft @ 6200rpm vs 170lb/ft @ 4200rpm. That kind of even things out. I would leave your friend alone, you are only 21 and have a whole life ahead of you to be suck into a match with a childish person (not a friend IMO). True car enthusiast don't trash talk other people's ride especially from the same family (Honda and Acura).

Colin, you cracked me up The poor guy wasn't even born when the movie first came out.
BTW, the folks at Pflueger are some of the nicest people I have ever met when I visited Honolulu last November for Thanksgiving with my cousin. While my wife went shopping across the street at Ala Moana mall, I spent nearly 2 hours at the parts and service dept with my kids playing at the two computers there. The parts guy ever gave me a Pflueger license plate holder for free as a souvenir.

Sounds to me like you have some pretty immature friends. WHo cares if his car is faster or not?
Ask him what car he thinks a chick is going to pick, a civic, or a nice luxury sedan...

he'll beat you. my sister has a 09 civic si and i drove it around for a few days...it's jumpier off the line and the engine is alot more responsive. i mean..thats what it's meant for. it's a sports car. our TSX's arnt meant for racing. However, the 6-speed tsx vs the 4 door si would be a different story...it should be pretty even given the drivers have about the same skill level...I'll have to race my sister someday when she get's back from virginia tech..lol.

I owned both car's before I sold the si, ( both 6 m/t ) and I can tell you that the TSX is faster in a 1/4 mile run. That is assuming that you booth have the same driving skills. My TSX was only 0.8 and 0.6 sec. faster. ( I drove both cars against time ) And this was done on a track.
You are talking about racing your Auto vs. M/T. DON'T do it.

I wouldn't even bother racing an AT, especially on public roads. Just start listing all the features your car has that his doesn't. Maybe that'll quiet him.

This is funny because i just raced my friend last week and he has a 08 si coupe with a fujita short ram intake. i have a 2010 auto i4. I must say it was very close. He had me every time but by no more than half a car length. We went from a stop, and from 40 roll. Considering the sedan weighs more and your friend is stock, you might have a better chance than me. Let us know what happens. Just remember to start in S and hit a paddle before you go. Because there is a difference between shifting at 6800 or 7300.

WTH happened to my garage
I had a 07 Si with a CTE header and...yeah, it was eventually quicker than my TSX MT, but it's supposed to be.
Ask his girlfriend which one she'd rather be seen in.

Although the Si may win, our cars are better in every aspect. Just tell that guy that your cars superior in every way and even in the performance department, the gap is so minimal that it dosent even matter...

WOW! Thanks guys for the many responses! I slept on it last night and woke up this morning WANTING to drive my car! I agree, street racing isn't the best idea and I have to admit, I haven't been a very good boy =(. I've done the occasional 3 honk runs against some of my other friends and have taken the tsx out for a twisties run up in Woodside, California. We raced once on 280 going to San Jose, when we were on a roll going at around 20 mph, I downshifted to 1st gear on sport and actually took off of on him (that's when he claims he was on 2nd or 3rd). However, whenever we were going like 30 - 40mph when I was on 2nd gear, he would just take off and I was never able to catch up =(. I probably won't do it now... one of my other friends had a c350 for a couple of months and decided to race the EXACT same guy (he was driving a minicoop back then) talking trash and my friend's c350 understeered off a corner, hit a curb, flip 3 times, and totaled his c350 (however, now he owns a 335i -_-). So I guess probably not a good idea. Although, I MUST ADMIT, through all these responses, sooner or later, I will probably go against him, just to be honest.

Not to preach, but I think you should maybe think twice about racing after what happened to your friend. It could very easily end up much worse than totaling your car.

I would agree that racing on the street is silly but I'm sure many of us have done it regardless, (I did on a few occasions when I was much younger).
Either way the Civic Si is the faster car guys, the extra torque in the TSX doesn't make up the weight differential.

Yeah, this is the wrong place to try to justify street racing. Derwood will punch you in the throat.
Seriously, take it to the track. We've all known people who got a 2nd chance, then some of us know those whose lives were lost during such a "innocent" competition. Most tragically, sometimes it's someone who had *no* involvement whatsoever.
Does anyone remember the 'Stang Banger' who unknowingly killed his mother in another car when he lost control while street racing? She was driving with a friend "looking at Christmas lights."
http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/sonkillsmom.html
Don't know why I was thinking about that collision (not accident) last night for some reason.
Don't you have a local drap strip that sponsors 'heads up grudge matches' with no times posted on the board? It's the best way to settle a dispute, if you end up on your lid, there's someone to help you and you don't risk injuring or killing someone else, their loved one, or child.
I co-founded an organization called raceresponsibly.org following the loss of a good friend and customer in 2000. Unfortunately we were unable to attract any sponsors to help maintain it.
We've all done it, it's been around since the dawn of time. Have enough sense to be above it and take a stand against it amongst your friends.

yea, don't race, its just stupid. I was in the same situation that you are in a year back when I was driving my 1G TSX and my friend had just got his 07 Civic Si Sedan and he was rubbing it my face about how fast it is and stuff. The funny thing was that I knew more about his car than he did and the best comeback besides having more features and the 'luxury' part was that I said to him "My car's resale value can buy your new car and some change" lol.
With regards to the racing, when I was immature, I did sorta raced him. Obviously with the weight difference, off the line, the Si will definitely get the lead. But like on a rolling start, it gets even.
But yeah, I don't even talk to my friend at all.

If someone is that concerned about who's car is faster, go buy a real car. LOL We're talking about two 4 cyl cars who's drag times aren't exactly stunning, nor are they meant to be. If someone told me their car is faster than mine, I'd just be like so what...I didn't buy this car because it was fast. If I wanted to win races I would have spent my money on another car!

You know, I *do* sound like one of the V6 Camaro/Mustang guys when I say that "I don't care how fast my car is." but I really don't. I've had some quick cars in the past & I wouldn't be caught dead in (insert model here) unless it had the biggest baddest engine they offered. With this car, I don't give a crap.

I wouldn't race him. You will lose, there is no doubt in my mind. I raced an 09 SI coupe and got destroyed and I have a 6MT. Racing is dumb I would know first hand, I totaled my first nice car when I was 16. If you want to do something race him at an autocross.

"The Si now has the much-needed speed to compete in the pocket-rocket market, ripping off 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds"
"The TSX did just that, hitting 60 in 7.5 sec."
You are the one that is wrong this time. We went up to 100 and he killed me. The SI has the K20 engine which is a higher reving engine and overall the car is much lighter.
