does Gracenote affect only HDD files, or all songs i.e. those played via radio, usb, etc...?

To my knowledge it is only used for files on the HDD. When a CD is copied to the HDD it uses the Gracenote database to identify the title/artist/tracks of the CD so if the CD is not in the Gracenote database version currently installed on your HDD you will get generic title information. Once you install the new version of Gracenote database you can go back and try to identify previously unidentified CDs.

I dont understand what Gracenote actually doe from a driver standpoint. Would anyone care to opine?

Gracenote is used to identify CDs you put in the car. Most newer and older CDs have track information which can be used to rip the disk to the HDD (If applicable).

Just a heads up for anyone updating with a CD. Took about 10-15 minutes so be patient.

Note: just updated to latest Gracenote DB. Main file is about 350MB, which on a PC would take less than a minute; to update it in the car, either CD or USB stick, takes about 10 minutes. My first time doing this, didn't want to idle the car for 10 minutes, didn't want to sweat into the seats for 10 minutes.... kind of alternated, with turning engine and accessory mode off and on, and it still worked, fortunately.

There should be clearer info re: whether you should be running the engine or not while updating, and how long it will take.

My advice: put it on a USB stick (next one will be released July/August 2012) and update it when you are planning to be driving for at least 30 minutes. Start it before you take off, though.
