Getting Pulled over for stock HID's

today, i got pulled over with my STOCK HID's, even tho it was pouring rain out and it would have been dangerous to drive without them, the cop told me they were too bright and that if i used them he would give me a ticket, on the other hand wouldnt i get a ticket for not using my lights in this situation too, he ended up giving me a warning but it seems kind of outragious that he was threating me for a ticket if i used them when there my stock headlights and my only headlights other then daylights which woldnt have helped. anyone else hear of this?

as long as they were stock, you could take it to court if you did get a ticket.

Have you ever touched the alignment of the headlights? If not, then your light level should be completely fine. Can you check it against a wall? Turn your headlights on and see how high they aim up. If it's too high, then go back to your dealership and ask them to realign it or do it yourself. I think it should be pretty easy but I've never done it.

But yea, if everything is fine and you get a ticket later on, just fight it in court.

just be sure not to drive into the wall, it should be fairly obvious to you if they are misaligned, just drive close enough so that you can see the sharp cutoff line that is produced. It should fall slightly below or around where your headlights are protruding from and be lower on one side

Kazelement, are you running a drop, or have anything (dead body?) in the trunk that may cause your HL's to be slightly tilting upwards?

When checking alignment against a wall, don't forget that your passenger beam should be aligned slightly higher than the left.

PS: What a moron cop.

o_o Shoulda just slapped the cop one and drove off... Jokes. But that's stupid as; I agree, he must've been retarded. You can't get fined for having factory HIDs. I just drove passed a cop car on my way home, it's 1am and I have 8000k low beams and foggies, I sorta crapped my pants but they just drove right passed me. You shouldn't worry about it at all.

I have been pulled over before for the same thing. I do however have 5000K HID bulbs instead of the stock 4300K. The cop said my lights blinded him as well, and the proceed to look at the headlight housing and realized the car has HID's from the factory. I do have HID fogs as well, but did not have them on when I was pulled over for the headlights.

To make it even better, the car that passed me at the same time the copy turned on his lights to pull me over had HID's in a reflector housing...

Screw 'em. I would have just flipped 'em on right there in front of him. They are stock. Nothing he can do about it. Ticket? Fight it and then sue for time and money wasted over bullshit to make a point that they need to look out for the assholes driving with HIDs in standard housings. I wrote a nice long letter to the Virginia State Police and the governor about it. Don't think they really care. But when people start getting into serious accident because everyone is driving around blinded from the front and rear then they'll do something.

yeah ill see what acura says, but im sure they're probably alligned correctly, just this cop maybe hasnt driven a car in like 5-10 years? i dont know, hid's are everywhere now, i just think it wasnt even worth wasting my time to pull me over to tell me this when everything on my car is stock. this is how all illinois cops are tho they are almost always in a bad mood and they take the job overly seriously, atleast on the highway.

That was seriously lame of the police. If it was me I'd just keep on driving with them on. Hahaha, but seriously sorry you was harassed over nothing. Not cool at all.

OP, well why didn't you say it was an Illinois cop? lol. That state is in financial distress. Cops and authorities are going to be looking for ANY type of revenue that they can get...

A friend of mine told me about his friend getting towed in downtown Chicago. Cost him $1k.

There absolutely were some scenarios, instead of bashing the cop, hold off a bit and think or try to think logically, we might then find out a solution.
1. How many TSX in your area?
2. How many vehicle that has HID in your area?
If the answer is a lot, then you should ask yourself why only you got pulled over? I believe we, entire of AZine community members, never have this kind of problem. Why you? Why only you?
3. What did you do so that gotten pulled over?
Personally thinking, you must do something that may provoke him pulled you over. Think.

I'm always getting the hi-beam flash from folks thinking my HID are on high once I get off the interstate and hit the state roads (visiting the in-laws). Most folks in NM don't drive cars or trucks with HID in the less populated areas.

I just try to travel more in daylight hours to see the in-laws, tired of getting flashed +50 times on a 3 hour drive.

As far as getting pulled over, I think it was a combination of the HID, wet road reflecting light perfectly, and a cop having a bad day.

well i drive on the highway like 90% of the time of my commute which 70 miles round trip. so there for my area is the highway, i see probably 2-3 tsx's a day, but to answer your 2nd question theres audi's, bmw's all kinds of high end cars here that all have HID's, and the 3rd question would be i drove behind the cop, i guess thats reason enough to be pulled over. it probably had something to do with the conditions but it was dangerous not to have some sort of lights on, even tho drove the rest of the journey which i was a little less then half way to work 35 mile trip so i was probably 15-20 miles in, but i drove the rest with no lights. i dont know why only i got pulled over, maybe secretary of state cops really crack down on stuff that local cops wouldnt, i know state troopers are that way too, either way i did nothing wrong by driving with them on. so screw him.

Next time just switch your lights to the auto setting and let the DRL's do their job. Techincally DRL's are all that's needed for driving in rainy conditions. I know IL is kind of a stickler for it, but you'd probably be less likely to get pulled over for having your headlights off and DRL's on, than your headlights on with a stupid cop.

Was it a suburb cop or a city cop in IL? I used to live in the NW Chitown suburbs and all those cops have a personal vendetta against us 20-somethings.

well i had the car in AUTO for the headlights, so it chose to have the HID's on. and the the cop was a Secretary of state cop, you barely see them ever but ive only ever seen them on the highway. id say they're just as bad as state troopers. the only reason the DRL's werent as was cause it was raining and it was dark, they literally changed like 5-10 miles before the cop incident from DRL to HID, but then when i was almost to work i through my auto's back on that the DRL's came back, but i think its cause it got a little brighter.

Your lenses should have DOT molded into them, your vehicle invoice indicates Xenon lighting, or HID lighting.

OY! I'd be torqued if I got pulled for that.

i like how it looks but its mostly the view of the photo i took, its 100% stock so basically everyone's 2010 model looks like that, minus the scrape of course which just i cant believe i got. i cant confirm they did it but atleast they are willing to fix it.

It depends on where you live. Over here, your headlights must be on whenever conditions require you to turn on your windshield wipers. Thus, if it's raining enough that the wipers are needed, then headlights are required.

As for being pulled over, officers will find any reason to pull you over if you annoy them in some way. Over here, I see alot of people getting tickets because they made a turn and the cops had to tap on the brakes slightly.
