Flat or Gloss black?!?! Please help!!

Hey everyone. My car is going in for paint tomorrow night and I need to decide what kind of black to paint my rear lip. FLAT BLACK or GLOSS BLACK.

My appointment is tomorrow night so I want to get as much feedback as possible before then. I assumed it would be gloss at first to match my other parts, but now that its coming up I am having doubts and second thoughts.

I have no idea if painting this part of the lip will even look good, but I am going to try it and if it looks bad Ill just have to live with it lol.

Here are pics of my car, then the photoshops (done on ms.paint) to show which area im talking about. Thanks in advance.

It does look kinda funny, the reverse of a transom style bumper, ya know?

Flat, if you're gonna.

No offense... I bitched about the chrome door handles on the 2011. I also love your roof treatment (how in the hell did you do that and how much does it costs?)

If you want the spoiler to stand out, I'd go with glossy.

However, I'm not get a good pic of your rims. The rims coupled with the black handles does something to cheapen the look of the car. Chrome in the dish of the rims and chrome handles would be hot IMHO.

I still want to know about your roof.

Are your lip, roof and door handles glossy or flat?

If they are flat I say go flat to match and vice versa

My roof is just a gloss black vinyl. Just search around at local sign and tint shops and they should be able to give you a price quote. In the pic, I am on my winter steelies. My handles are stock also.

I have Gloss black Roof, Gloss black Spoiler, Gloss black grille. My handles are still chrome. My wheels are grey right now and will be silver in a couple months.

This is how my car is right now

I have a thing for matching everything so in that case I say gloss it up.

It will match the silver rims, will those be brushed or full polish? Hopefully polished...so itl match the chrome door handles haha

you know, ideally I want that look too defcon. But the thing is that there is no line for me to follow horizontally through that middle piece. I cant just paint horizontally black through the entire piece through the raised parts and the un raised parts...i need to follow a natural line on the lip

Why not take it back to the guys that did your roof and use vinyl there as well? Gotta be way cheaper and if you get tired of it, just peel it off.

i mean use plasti dip since its flat black. if you dont like it, peel it off. you can add a faux line using those chrome moldings from autozone or pep boyzzzzzzzz. this would raise it and give you a line and then paint it with the plasti dip

my vote still goes for NONE

I think this mod only looks "good" in JPG format. In real life, it would probably look cheap. The problem is that it's not a separate part that's being painted, so the paint will define the line above the reflector. It would be very difficult to get that line to be perfect.

Besides, your car looks great already!

I really appreciate everyones opinions and I am starting to believe what you guys are saving that i should just leave it. I am well aware it looks great as it is, but I will follow through with this risk in hopes that it will look even better. I am paying only $50 for it so money wise its not that much. At this point I am feeling doubtful that it will look better than stock but like I said, I just feel like taking a risk. Theres only one year left on my lease so I really just want to try it..just to try it. Wont have my girl for much longer..

The Russian CU2's kinda look cool there, would be bomb tings if you had a rear diffuser to match J's Racing or Voltex maybe? Holla!

But it also reminds me of the previous gen Mazda3 they had bumpers that had plastic rears that were the same shape.

And defcon that line all the way across would make it look like an OEM Aero rear bumper if you didn't look closely at it+ fake chrome trim would be extremely ghetto looking on a car that costs this much lol

type-s sides are warped....and somehow got warped even more sitting in my shed. you can have em free if you pay for shipping. My front has a scratch on it so not sure if you want it lol.

And i dont know what ill be getting next. Maybe nothing cause I want to try living on my own and if I do, I cant afford to maintain a car. Im only 22....

MrNC: yes i know what you mean. It was the mazdaspeed 6 that gave me this initial idea.

Mr oto: Yes I thought that too...in real life the part im painting is raised so it might not look as good as in pics where you cannot see the 3D ness of it as well.

Speed: Its only $50 so I think the cost to vinyl that will be more. But I did contemplate that

Aaaaahh 22 to be young and broke same age and boat as you bro haha. The amount of money I put into paying off my student loan. I coulda had some nice 19x9.5 3pc Rotiform Super Concave BLQ's by now. But alas duty calls.

For sure when you mentioned the painted tails I thought of Mazda right away lol. I think for them it works cuz their bumpers have that plastic part painting it will have the same yet different effect.

Flat black to match the steelies!

Honestly I'm voting for white. Your car looks amazing as it is now. Agreed with Nate--Defcon's design makes it look like the OEM aero kit cause it takes away the middle slit

even if ziners are saying "dont do it" we all know that all your mods are always great so you gonna end up getting comments like "this actually looks awesome"

haha i actually thing doing black would look great! kinda like a diffuser look. def. do matte black though, gloss black in the rear will look weird even though you will be matching roof/spoiler. IMO that bottom part looks besst matte

dips on front lip (maybe)

why not plasti-dip that part first to see how it looks before u drop 50 on the paint job? If you like it, then peel off the plasti-dip and get it painted, if you don't then peel off the plasti-dip and leave it white.

This literaly was the words being ripped out of my mouth as I read through this thread. I would vinyl it or plasti dip so that you can remove it if you dont like it. Good luck though, again your car is sex on wheels, even with the steelies!

Hey my canadian bro
I tried the same a few months before. I got the same doubts as you if it will look good or bad. So I tried in Vinyl. The result wasnt as good ( the russian one looks a litlle better, he has the black a little smaller than me) so I tear the vinyl away. Glad I didnt paint it that way. Doesnt matter flat or gloss. This dont look good on our bumper. Maybe only find a different line for the black
Heres a pic of my try ( I didnt cut the vinyl nice, I only wanted to see if my idea was good)
