does sports shift save gas?

does using sports shift save gas and can anyone explain to me how it works lol
The only purpose for me is when i downshift from 3 to 2 when racing with my friends but does it have any other purposes ?
like i was driving down a hill and i changed to S gear and my car felt heavy and felt like it was getting held back

S mode keeps you in a lower gear for longer, worse on gas, higher RPM's for easier and quicker accel. the car feels heavier because its pushing through the RPM band past 5000K, unlike D where it'll switch to the next gear well before then. i guess it can technically be better for gas mileage if you really watch the RPM's and switch up earlier, so at lower RPM. remember higher RPM's = more gas being used

your car felt heavy because shifting into S will drop you 1, maybe even 2 gears, causing you to engine brake down the hill. an easy way to ruin a transmission is to drop it to a gear that you're going too fast for. even though it's still a slush box, you're putting unnecessary pressure on the transmission by doing that.

this will help you understand how it works: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...ansmission.htm

Our car has an instant MPG function on the MID. Mess around and find which way saves the most gas. I know for sure that if you're shifting at ~7000RPM then no, you're not saving gas.

lol yes, you own an auto so it changes gears for you

when i do sports mode, i like to downshift at the freeway if i want to pass someone or something, but afterwards i just go back into D. if you stay in the high rpms though, like say 5000 rpm, when you gas it the car moves a lot easier than in D mode at like 3000 rpm

stay safe young gun

If manually shifting, an AT (or normal use of a MT), keep an eye on the tachometer, but for quickest Elapsed Time, shift when you feel the car stop pulling (accelerating).

That is, of course, unless you're on a dragstrip and the ET would be quicker if you didn't shift or hit the rev limiter before the end of the track. Make sense?
