Do you use the parking brake with AT?
#41
If it was designed to do it, then why would you even bother applying the parking brake when you're on a hill?

actually this wont do much good....your brakes are more powerful than your parking brake....you want to make sure ALL the weight in on the brake and not the tranny....
this is how you should do:
Stop
Shift to N
Parking brake engaged
Foot off the brake
Let the car settle
Foot on the brake and hit P
this way the weight of the car is on the parking brake and not the transmission....

Ok, let me get this straight.
If I am parking on a slope, my car facing down the hill, and I want to back up into the space (meaning that I am reversing my car up the hill), I should always lift the parking brake up while the car is on "R" and reverse into the spot? This way, the car does not lurch and hurt the tranny?
I'm not being sarcastic. I was taught by my father that the parking brake is only to be engaged after you park the car.

I assume any other method would put a small amount of stress on the drivetrain.

you stop on a slight incline...the car is stopped in 1 spot coz of the foot brake...then according to your method, you shift into N, engage ebrake, foot is still on the brake, push to P....so you went from weight on the foot brake to weight between transmission and ebrake....
now try this,
you stop on a slight incline...the car is stopped in 1 spot coz of the foot brake...then according to my method, you shift into N, engage ebrake, foot is OFF the brake, let the car be stopped in one spot because of the ebrake, push to P....so you went from weight on the foot brake to on the ebrake....

^^^ honestly not toooo much....not much at all on level grounds but quite a lot on inclines/declines

I like doing his just in case somebody runs into your car

TL;DR to all of the above.
foot on brake, shift to Sport, ebrake on, turn key to accessory, get out of the car.
it'll take someone very smart to steal your car because the car will be off and wont turn on until you shift it back into park and fully turn the car off, but the car also wont drive until you turn the car on =)

whaaaaaaaat the fuuuuuuuuuuuk??? this i didnt see coming. its very different ill admit...i like it actually.....BUT!!!!!!!!! u cant lock ur car so someone who is not very smart can come and screw with it....steal stuff from inside or just decide to ruin ur leather because he can...never happened to me but i only need it to happen once before i kill all my neighbors....lol. on a side not, leaving it in S mode, is that the same thing as leaving it in gear for a manual?

also, you can lock it from the inside, then use the spare or valet key to open the door

umm pyro...consider someone who opened your car....the car alarm goes off....
the thief pushes the car into auto takes the key out presses the unlock button....alarm is off....and he has the key to your car....honestly if you were being sarcastic then its my bad....if you were not being sarcastic and leave the key inside the car "hoping" its a dumb thief who doesnt push the car into park, i wish you all the best....

I always use the parking brake to avoid the parking "lurch" and in case other drivers run into my car and send it flying... My question is, if your car gets towed, does it do any damage while the parking brake is engaged with the car being dragged away?
#65
Get a stick shift and you won't have to worry about any of dis.

Why would that drive you nuts?

yea i thought the general consensus was to leave the car in 1st gear with parking brake engaged, or reverse plus parking brake if parked on a hill facing down. the best was a story about a guy who got a remote start on his manual car, left it in first gear, then used remote start to start the car, car was in gear, just went straight to a wall and kept bouncing off the wall till it burned out

A good habit to get into. Since the parking pawl essentially locks the transmission's output shaft to the transmission casing, use of the pawl (pin) only, especially when parking on steep inclines, means that drive-line and transmission components are constantly under stress, causing wear and eventual failure of the parking pin or transmission linkage. I've seen it happen.
Love that show!
