Carplay in 2020

Anyone installed a Carplay or whatever the Android version is called these days (Goog changes names a lot lol) replacement system and want to show it off here?

Alternatively, I saw Magsafe mounts that work pretty well but I won't be upgrading my phone until at least next year. If going with Magsafe, I almost want to put a gimbal behind it.

Or maybe hop ahead to the future with fancier HUD systems, if any are worth considering.

It's always been called Android Auto and I'm still running the stock base stereo. I just have a cheap mount to the vent. It works fine, as there is really not that much I need to see on the phone while driving.

Ah nice, I do remember trying out AA before I finally relented on Android in general and switched to iPhone during my last phone change. I used to flash 3rd party ROMs, use custom loaders, opened them up by melting the glue with hairdryers to swap out batteries that died in months (as much Android's fault as the battery's). All that high maintenance, fun the 1st time but only the 1st time, goes away w/ iPhone.

iPhone AFAIK doesn't let you start Carplay on the phone itself; it has to be on an external screen. Not sure how ppl would do it on the TSX; a new system may render the top screen by the dashboard useless.

There is a dedicated forum here just for infotainment systems. And, of course You Tube has a few videos. The installation is cleaner with the base unit than the optional Tech package.

I was tempted to get this for my Tech package TSX due to the HVAC controls being integrated into the factory HU > 2008-2012 Honda Accord Android 10.0 Car GPS Navigation System Support 5GHz WiFi < But the Chinese brand and weak 2 Volts line level output was too much for me. I currently have a Kenwood Excelon DDX9907XR and Maestro iDatalink ADS-MRR2 planned for install soon. This setup from with I can tell will display the important HVAC info. And yes, Android auto & Apple car play capable wirelessly

I assume you’d start it from the CarPlay icon that would be on the head unit you install. I put a kenwood unit on my ‘12 se 6MT and this is how it works. Top screen retains display of climate control settings but is otherwise blank.

Cool, how was the installation process? Did it take a long time?

MagSafe charger + wireless Carplay would be ultimate convenience atm.

I scheduled it for a weekend when I had the house to myself. Friday evening removed old head unit, spent some time studying install threads and YouTube videos. Spent maybe 6 hours Saturday and then a bit of time Sunday. It was unnerving at times because I didn’t really know what I was doing and you have to work with your hands in tight spaces with very little wire slack at times, wondering what all you could possibly mess up if you do something wrong. Some trial and error test fitments, things not always being the way instructions say they’ll be, etc. But I got it done and it’s been about 18 months now without issues and I love it and I’m so glad I did it.

If you do it I’d suggest definitely put in the wiring for a backup camera (and maybe dash cam too) whether you plan to install them or not. Just put them to the head unit and then stash the wires behind the steering column. I did this and went back a month or 2 later to do the backup camera and it was nice because I didn’t have to get to the head unit to add it. I didn’t put wires for a dash cam and now I’ll basically never have that option because I’m not willing to take it all apart to wire it in.

Whoa, congrats on finishing that marathon! If you want to add a dashcam, the mirror plug might be a good option:

Anyone speak Russian can can tell if this guy mentioned his setup details such as model?

Though I like the use of the top screen, it seems too inconvenient to reach while driving, makes you want to be that T1000 guy from Terminator who can elongate his arm lol.

This might be on the right track though old AF and would need an updated version.

Currently checking out Pioneer vs Sony, W4660NEX vs AX5500.
Pioneer has wireless Carplay but Sony has 2x the power at 100W vs 50W peak.

Would the difference in power make any difference on the stock TSX speakers? What's the wattage on the stock unit?

Got tired of researching and just went with one as soon as a decent discount came about. Sony AX8000, 9" screen:

Sony AX8000

I wavered a lot between this and wireless-Carplay options and kind of just set a time limit on the decision lol. For roughly the same price, wireless would've been nice but most trips will need the phone to be charging anyway. In return, I get a snappier UI and a larger screen.

HD or better screen would've been ideal but those were over $1k just for the radio.

Had to do some followup things:
TSX-related:
- the dashboard kept showing "Pairing" intermittently (same problem as in this post) in place of the usual MPG/miles info. I had to remove the Handsfreelink module that's under the glove box. Thankfully a tool-less job (despite what the repair manual says ) but took a while looking up how to do it.

aftermarket parts-related:
- the AX8000 doesn't seem to have an ambient light sensor; the display automatically dims when you turn on the headlights. This gets tricky in cloudy/overcast weather when you turn on lights but it's still daytime and you need the display to be bright. Slightly disappointing.
- when putting the car in reverse and displaying the dashcam, I get 2 sets of lines on the display. The store said they need to cut an additional wire somewhere. Strange that cutting a wire is how it's done as opposed to configuring in a menu.

Think this may be common. The head unit can render lines. And the camera comes with lines. So by default they may both be on. I preferred the lines rendered by head unit, so I cut the wire on the camera. The head unit lines can be managed through a menu I bet.

Yea the shop also put my shift knob on with the legend a bit rotated off center so hopefully they can fix that also but wouldn't be surprised if I have to do it myself.
Did you also have to disconnect the Handsfreelink module?

I did but I don’t remember why or if I really had to. I think I’d read ahead of time to clear it beforehand or I’d have the problem you had. I don’t recall why I took it out or if I had to. I know I had to tap into a wire from way over on that side but I don’t remember what for. Maybe phone steering wheel controls?

nice, my steering wheel phone buttons are out of action now, just the volume and skip buttons remain standing

also was able to turn off the head unit's backup cam lines an use the cam's lines. not adjustable as with HU's lines but worth the time savings

Just curious, what'd yall do with the original head unit (and Handsfreelink module)? Was there much market value for them?

Looking good, seen some samples where it's recessed back a bit but not here. Is it just the lighting or did a gap appear b/t the unit and the top of the harness in the 2nd pic?

BTW do you know if yours has an ambient light sensor to control auto-dimming for the screen? Was a bit surprised that the AX8000 didn't.

The Camera makes the gap look bigger than it is. It would have been perfect if the upper and lower of the trim were 1mm thicker. In the first picture the Kenwood trim did not fill the 4 corners properly. The second I got from Japan, part of Pioneer accessory line up for Honda vehicles. Maybe if it was a Pioneer it would have filled the gap better. Or it is possible the gap is needed to facilitate how the screen angles in and out. The Kenwood trim does have the same amount of gap. As for the bezel, that is an original Honda factory part for the Japanese market. That is the reason why it is not recessed back like the others you have seen. I have one more part coming from Japan, I'll see if it fills the gap better.

To the best of my knowledge the Kenwood does have a light sensor.
