Can I get a used Acura certified from a non-Acura dealer?

I'm looking to buy an 09 TSX from an Infiniti dealer... Would they be able to certify it under Acura's CPO program?

No is the correct short answer. But, you can buy an Acura care extended warranty up to the time your original 48mo 50k warranty runs out. And they are usually less expensive than than upcharge for a CPO. So you end up with the same or better warranty, roadside etc for the same or less $$.

The correct answer is no but you should know why. The certifiaction is not just a warrenty it is also what has been done to the car. A full 150 point inspection, Carfax history report, replaced parts with real Acura parts, and the condition needs to meet Acura's quality standards. The reason only Acura can certify them is only Acura has the knowledge to do so.

You can legally sell a car that does not meet up with Acura's certified standards and you can also buy a warranty that gives you the same kind of warranty protection you get with a CPO Acura. So while you may have the same warranty coverage, your brakes and tires on the non CPO car could need to be replaced in 4 months, that would not be the case on an Acura Certified car.

Warranty coverage is only part of the benefits of a CPO car.

Here's a link to the Acura 150 points CPO checklist:

http://www.acura.com/content/pdf/CPO_150pt.pdf

As you can see, the minimum tire thread depth is 5/32 (new tire typically has 10/32 to 11/32 depth) and minimum brake pad is 50%. So even with a CPO Acura, you may need to replace both tires and brakes within a year of ownership.

All CPO comes with 12 months/12000 miles warranty coverage after the normal 48 months/50,000 miles expires.

So shilgy's reasoning is valid in that you can purchase extended warranty from Acura and have coverage extended upto 100,000 miles. Just make sure you have the Acura check out by someone else (Carfax history report and service records) before getting from a non-Acura dealer.

It goes without saying have any used car purchase checked by a trusted tech. But as others have mentioned on various threads the CPO is not a sacred ckecklist. I purchased a Legend as a CPO years ago and within the first 1000 miles the engine siezed because the dealer "thought" they knew the service history and neglected a few expensive steps of the inspection. IMHO it is just as good to get a trusted preowned and add the Acuracare service contract just before the original warranty runs out. Others may disagree, that is what forums are for.
