Best place to put my radar detector?

I have a Escort Passport 8500 X50 i put it in the middle of my windshield but I dont like the wire just hanging and want to hide it more. I was thinking about putting it top of the window where my rearview window is but not sure if i will get great coverage... is it hard to wire it up there?

What do you guys think?

best spot is right next to the rearview and then wire the power into the mirror's power.

I know some people fit it into their center console like this:

. Not sure if that could work on the TSX though.

Vr1 I'm pretty sure that's a built in escort unit... Costs a lot more too, and to install.

I have a Bel Sti that shares many of the internals of the 8500. There is plenty of coverage (front and rear) mounting near the rear view mirror. You should be able to easily tap into the auto-dimming mirror coupler for power.

I used an Invisicord for power. I also used RhinoGlue for gluing a factory metal mount (with suction cups removed) to windshield and the detector is hidden along the tint strip of the windshield. It's a clean install and very ergonomic placement for my detector- no need for a remote mute switch when the detector is easily in arms reach.

Here are some images of what I'm talking about:

Outside:

Inside:

The advantages of this install are theft prevention, rigid mount(detector doesn't bounce around), visibility, and ergonomics

The disadvantages are: reduced motion of visor mostly. I found my mount bounced too much with the blend mount solution hanging under the mirror.

Best one i've seen is a GTR with detectors and jammers on the front and rear grilles... totally invisible unless you know it's there. On the interior the screen is hidden behind a door.

The wire colors on the back of the mirror (left to right) are brown, black and white (the brown wire is sort of an orange brown and appears to alternate silver but I can't see much of it).
Will i tap into the auto dimming power?

the radar detector MUST be taken apart of its components.

I'm assuming one of the sensors is behind the mirror to capture front forward radar signals.

it looks like the mirror houses the entire radar detector.

Im only assuming, as there were no text accompanying the photo

i have seen them for the V1 and vette. they send you a replacement mirror with the display in it. they also sell you the V1 remote audio so you can hear it. and then you had to mount the antenna's somewhere. a bit ridiculous for the endgame IMO/

was also 10 years ago lol

Similar concept to what you mentioned. I just purchased a replacement rear view mirror for $50 and sent it out to Scott at radar-mirror.com. He does mainly super high end cars that are looking for as stealth an option as possible. I went this route because I used to drive thru VA every weekend and didn't want to get harassed/ticketed by police. I mistakenly bought the smart radar thinking the antenna it used was invisible to SPECTRE radar detector detector guns but I was wrong. The good thing for me though was that because this install is so stealth, police would never find it. The radar unit I used was Escort's smart radar. There is a remote display and a main unit. The main unit is mounted in the center headrest and the display, control and speaker have been relocated to the rearview mirror. I lost laser functionality mounting the unit in the head rest but I don't run into many laser guns and to be honest by the time your detector goes off that you've been hit with laser, it's too late. I may mount some laser interceptor jammers on the bumper but at this point I may wait until I get another car.

I did spend a good bit. Would have used a different detector if I had it to do over but that would have added another $500 easily.

Curious - what was the outcome? Were the RDs confiscated? Were they fined? Got away with a warning?

They were given tickets. another friend was at the airport and the cop saw the detector (but it was off) and he got a warning.

Trucker Versus Virginia State Police - YouTube
Some Virginia State Police do indeed have VG2 or Spectre radar detectors in their cars. Some do not. The vast majority of radar detectors on the market are detectable but some of Escort/Beltronics higher end units are not. The passport redline a windshield mounted detector that is completely undetectable. Both of Escort's installed units, the 8500ci plus and the 9500ci are also undetectable.

I received a ticket 10 years ago for having a radar detector in Virginia. If you are a VA resident the officer will probably try and take the detector for "evidence."

I did a little reading last night. What I found was so long as the RD's serial number was visible, it was recorded on the ticket as evidence and was not taken as this was a "payable" offense. It seemed that if the serial number wasn't legible, it would be confiscated and returned in court after court costs were paid.
I have owned a RD for 25+ years and locally it's hasn't been an issue (CT repealed their RD laws in 98), but my daughter opted to pick a college in VA, so..........
