Air Bag Recall

Did a recall search on the Acura Owner's website and this popped up.....

Passenger Airbag Inflator

NHTSA RECALL NUMBER: 16V-346
MFR CAMPAIGN ID: KA7
CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION: Passenger Airbag Inflator
RECALL DATE: 05/23/2016
RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available.
SUMMARY:AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC. (HONDA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 ACURA TSX, 2011 ACURA TSX WAGON, AND 2010-2011 ACURA ZDX VEHICLES. ACCORDING TO THE EQUIPMENT DEFECT NOTIFICATIONS (16E-042 AND 16E-043) FILED BY TAKATA, THE PROPELLANT WAFERS IN SOME OF THE SUBJECT INFLATORS MAY DEGRADE OVER TIME, WHICH COULD LEAD TO OVER- AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION IN THE EVENT THE AIRBAG IS ACTIVATED. OVERLY AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION CREATES EXCESSIVE INTERNAL PRESSURE WHEN THE INFLATOR IS ACTIVATED, WHICH MAY CAUSE THE INFLATOR BODY TO RUPTURE. ACURA SUGGESTS THAT YOU AVOID HAVING A PASSENGER SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT UNTIL THE RECALL REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED.

SAFETY RISK:IN THE EVENT OF AN INFLATOR RUPTURE, METAL FRAGMENTS COULD PASS THROUGH THE AIRBAG CUSHION MATERIAL POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR FATALITY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.

REMEDY:THE REMEDY PARTS NEEDED TO CONDUCT PASSENGER FRONTAL AIRBAG INFLATOR RECALLS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE IN LATE SUMMER/FALL OF 2016. ACURA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS IN AN INITIAL LETTER WITH A SECOND LETTER BEING MAILED WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ACURA CLIENT RELATIONS AT 1-888-234-2138. ACURA'S NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL IS KA7.

I just called the dealership near me and talked to them about it. The airbags haven't been released yet for this recall because its the passenger side. Separate recall than the driver's side that was the big deal a while back. Once Honda releases the airbags (she thought in about a month or so but wasn't sure) then the dealerships will start ordering them which will take an additional month or so. Rental cars were given immediately no questions asked for the driver's side and a free tow to the dealership, but this one is for the passenger side so it's not as easy to get a free rental. You'll have to sweet talk the dealership and they will get with Honda since it'll be at Honda's expense. Apparently having an exploding airbag on the passenger side isn't as big of a deal to them as having one that explodes on the driver.

It seems like they are starting with the 2011 TSX Sport Wagon. I have the 2012 and it doesn't show up (yet). I also think they a prioritizing humid geographic locations first.

Now I'm debating just disconnecting my front airbags. I'm not sure what's worse, having them disconnected or the possibility of being impaled by metal shards when they go off? Anyone know how to disconnect the passenger airbag? (people with the user manual) I'm assuming there will be a dash light telling me it's disconnected. I guess it's just playing the odds that I won't be impaled, as millions have gone off and people weren't killed by it. There have also been a bunch people on these forums who have totaled their cars and been fine.

I rarely have passengers these days. I can wait it out for the parts to come in.

Some good info from Consumer Reports:
Takata Airbag Recall - Everything You Need to Know

Highlights:
- not all airbags in the recall are defective, but at 0.8% (from tests), it's still too high.
- so far, only Toyota is recommending turning off airbags as a temporary solution.

Do NOT try to deactivate the airbags. We know that the possibility of a post 2008 airbag failing now is minuscule and any issues caused by deactivating the airbag (like a passenger getting injured) would fall squarely in your lap.

Me? I'd tell Acura to give me a loaner until the parts come in - just like they did for the prior recall.

Given that Takata was dishonest about the problem initially, I'll take their word with a grain of salt.

That's probably not going to happen. Honda/Acura is telling customers not to put passengers in the front seat. With the driver airbag inflator issue, there was no alternate place.

I bought a car that seats 5 people, not a driver and a couple in the back seat.

Dealers and manufacturers get away with this shit because we let them. Don't let them.

In all recent Acuras and most recent Hondas, the passenger airbag will not inflate if there is not someone sitting in the front seat. I don't agree with forcing people to sit in the back seat either, but that is their logic.

I am fighting with Acura Client Relations now because my car is registered in NC (a very humid state), but Honda only considers South Carolina and below to be humid...

All 2nd Gen TSXs will eventually be recalled. It is just coming in cycles. Toyota is still making some older designs with the non-desiccated Takata airbags (e.g. 4 runner, Lexus GX).

Do you mean that 2012-2014 TSXs will likely be recalled for the passenger airbag? Or that there will likely be a recall for the driver airbag for all model years, too? Or both scenarios?

I also have an affected Odyssey, which has been in four times for both airbag fixes/replacements.

Considering the age of some of these vehicles, and the widespread distribution among models, I think Honda is doing a very good job providing information and expediting fixes.

For liability purposes, the 2012-2014 TSXs will likely be recalled to show the problem has been addressed, even if they're lower risk. I am not aware of the inflator issue on any of the recent vintage Hondas (Mine's a 2013)

Edit: It's also possible that the issue only crops up on vehicles with long term exposure to heat/humidity. As such, it's possible that the more recent models simply aren't likely to have this issue crop up.

i went to the dealer and they said my car qualifies and that they will order the piece...
what will be the difference after they fix it?

also i have a check airbag light on.... is it because of the recall?
and will it be fixed once they order the piece and replace it?

I don't believe the recall has anything to do with the check airbag light. If your car qualifies, there shouldn't be a change.

I'm a little confused... this recall is for the passenger airbag and folks are referring to a prior recall for the Driver's airbag? Was this just for high-humidity states?
I ask because although I'm not in a high-humidity state, I live in a high-humidity area on the California coast (dense fog in summer).
Sounds like I need to call Honda/Acura/Dealer and sort this out.
The car (2009 TSX) has spent all 8 years in a high-humidity area on the Coast.

"No new driver front airbag inflators in Honda or Acura automobiles will be subject to recall in this action, as all potentially affected driver inflators are already subject to prior recalls."

Excuse the language, but what the heck does this mean? We NEVER got a prior recall notice for the driver's side airbag of our 2009 TSX. Were we supposed to???
We're the original owner, Honda/Acura knows where we live and we've gotten other recall notices.

I know that no one likes the way this has played out and all the people who've been killed, etc, but the foot dragging is just ridiculous.

And no one is supposed to sit in the passenger seat until they get their act together sometime in the Fall (which presumably means December 19 or something like that)???

Not quite.

Try nhtsa.gov or safercar.gov
The .org may do the same thing that whitehouse.com and dot.com used to do - go to a porn site.

Actually, the .org takes you to a non-governmental site to prevent accidents, but has nothing to do with airbags.

If your driver's airbag has not been recalled to this point, it will not be recalled.

shut up ceb LOL

i gave the proper advice, didnt I?

dont be waiting for a letter especially if you arent the original owner but even if........

also someone is WONDERING about the front seat letter.
the only way you get a loaner is with a lawyer. and he will need to insist that you have a NEED to use the front seat if you want to use the are......like you have a family of 4 and you need to use it.
i suggest a search on THIS forum and see how the other owners are dealing.

Apparently, they are not. Only if you are suffering from a driver side airbag issue will they provide a loaner vehicle. Lame.

if your recall parts are in to be installed SURE LOANER.

if they say 'we'll call when the parts are in, might be months' then NO LOANER.

MMC with DCT is likely faster than the I4 TSX (yep I see you have a v6 haha)

When I got a loaner from them, they gave me a pre-MMC I4 ILX with the old 5AT and R20 motor, and that was the worst

Honda is estimating that 4.5 million passenger airbag inflators will need to be replaced. About 1 million replacement parts will arrive in August.

I think they'll loan him the 1.5L 4 cylinder hybrid ILX just so he won't ever ask again.

Even though the Acura web site still says "RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available.", the airbag is actually available. When I took the car in for service last Wed, my dealer ordered the air bag for me and the part arrived on Friday. I will have the airbag replaced next week. You can just call the dealer to order it for you. There is no need to wait for Acura to notify you.
