IS AGE A FACTOR? IN: What other cars have you owned, and what’s been your favorite?

I've been away from the forum for a while....but decided to take a look at what's new today. I noticed a thread called 'What other cars have you owned, and what’s been your favorite?' This is an enjoyable thread, but one thing that I noticed was that most of the 'favorite' car(s) were when guys/girls were younger, between 20-29, with an observable average of maybe 24-28 years old.

I have a strong hunch that the time / stage in one's life also reflects the feels / views on how one looks at their cars and which one will be the favorite.

Being a middle aged guy....with a full head of hair ... I've owned many cars in the past (from BMW to STi and then some), however if I am not able to drive them back to back I would not be able to comment objectively on which one drove the best and which one would be my favorite. (never mind about the tech toys, b/c old cars cannot compete with the newer tech toys). I would just be commenting on a memory of the car and that stage in my life (when I owned the respective car).

Favorite car is 1979 Caprice Classic. First car. Went from walking to driving. I didn't love this car, but there was plenty of loving in it....if you catch my drift.....if you've watched HTTM (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE) you'll understand where I'm coming from......hahahahaha.

Let me know what you guys / gals think about the time / age factor? Does it play a role? I'm always up for some good laughs!

My 2G TSX is my fav car to date

previous car i drove in was a 99 corolla. still enjoy driving that corolla from time to time when i dont feel like parking my acura on the street.

Im relatively young so i dont have a lot of experience to draw from personally as far as ownership but between all the cars my current family now owns / has owned i really love the 2G TSX. Not for one specific reason but for the whole entire package

I dont feel like being the only one posting a lewd story so lets see what else goes on in this thread for the time being lol

i think age does play some role. with that said, I am, with a few others, probably one of the few younger drivers here so we do not have much experience with other cars. my family owns three cars:

02 civic: the first car i got to drive in high school. small, easy to park, great absent of power, awesome grocery getter.
08 CRV: my sister's, i don't really like it. don't get me wrong, its a great car and drives very well, but i just dont like big cars. this is where age comes in, i think at my age i prefer more sporty car, some that i could do some modification on and call it my own, having it "look cool" and performs decently.
09 tsx: favorite. mostly because its a huge upgrade from the civic. never had leather seat, HIDs, more power (still not enough for me though, sometimes :p)

if i change car (maybe in a few years after i graduate from college) then maybe i want something with more power. then who knows, by that time that could be my favorite car. or i will grow out of the modding phrase and enjoy driving stock car, thus not having as much "spirit" into automobiles.

i'll report that in a few years

Personally I feel that age plays much less a factor than personal wealth and financial stability, or the financial successes of your parents. In high school I felt fortunate to drive a 13 yo Honda Accord that was given to me a month before I got my license. It was driven by everyone in my fam, and finally handed down to me. On another note, a very good friend was given an E-series Benz on his 16th bday. To each their own.

For me, age and purpose was an issue, before I had kids, it didn't matter, after they came along, it did.

I could put my kids in an EVO MR or a WRX STi, but I'd feel like a fvcktard pulling up to a wedding, funeral or client lunch in one of those things as a 44 year old man with a 14 year old, 10 year old twins and one that turned 6 months old yesterday.

I have a picture of THREE baby seats mounted in the back of my Q45...you should have seen the look on the drive through chickie's faces at any burger joint.

I think age does play some role. I have to drive clients in my car at work periodically. In addition, I got tired of every 20 year old in a souped up Civic trying to race me when my last car (Mazda6) was modded up (exhaust, intake, rims, lowered, etc - tasteful, but IMO too much for a 30 year old lol).

This is the reason I had to sell the TL... damn kids and there stuff was to much lol...... I think its different for everyone, its all about what you are willing to live with... I have a friend that has 3 little boys and his family drive one car ... a civic and they are cool with that. To each his/her own.

Wife and I are both 45, 2 kids, married for 25 years.

For me, kids were the deciding factor on what car to purchase. Once you have a few rug rats running around you have to factor in a lot of variables that will influence every short term and long term decision. Once you factor in: daycare cost, cloths, home, vacation, insurance, private school, sports, college fund/college, etc…; and you still need to plan for retirement, health, your own career growth, taking care of aging parents, higher cost of living, etc…

The wife and I figured we can do the same thing in an Acura TSX or RDX compared to vehicles costing twice as much. We still get the taste of performance and luxury without having to sacrifice in other areas in our lives. Besides, I can’t image spending $45,000-$55,000 for a BMW 5-series or MB E-class and it will only be worth about $6,000-$8,000 more than my 06 TSX 5 years later.

Once we get the last kid out the house (13 years old), we can shift those funds to more luxury items and more fun for just for the wifey and I.

Please note that this survey / poll is a little flawed due to the demographics profile of the forum. For it to be really valuable data, we would need a random sample of about 50 tsx owners from each age group with a few other 'controls'.

But it's still fun reading about everyone's feedback.

Yeah, I remember walking in the house last year, seeing her with a $hit-eating grin on her face...and an EPT box in the bathroom trash can. It's all good, I'm 44, she's 35, we were very fortunate.

To think I'm pushing for a dog, too. I'm a glutton for punishment.

hmmm... can't seem to be able to select my age group!

To date, my TSX is my most favourite car, and it replaced (not literally) my former "dream car", which was the 03 TL Type-S (don't laugh hehe)

Age and your lot in life is totally a factor in buying a car, IMHO
Took me 11 years to finally get my own car; some are spolit in having nice, rich parents or that killer job with excellent pay

Oh well, you make do with what you can eh?

TSX is my first car and I'm probably the youngest on these boards. Gotta say I love it!
I've driven friend's and relative's cars, Corollas to Mercedes, Accords and moded Civics and what nots. And I gotta say I love the TSX the most. Maybe it's because I'm used to it and didn't have enough time with the other cars?

At my age, I probably coulda picked out a more sporty, used car but decided on the TSX ultimately. Seemed like it was a very good car.

I think also, in addition to this, we should try to get a demographic of what kind of people drive new TSXs!!

Age and stage in life are factors in what I drive, but not how much I like the car. I do consider the car's age in how I evaluate it, i.e., how good it was for its time. For example, even though my 1983 Accord (R.I.P.) wasn't even remotely as good as my 2010 TSX in absolute terms, for its time it was comparable. Similarly, even though my 2001 Saab 9-5 Aero wasn't as good in most respects as my TSX, considering its late 1990's era origins, it was an amazing feat of design and engineering. (Of course, it also had an MSRP of about $42k, though I didn't pay anything close to that.)

Hm I surprised there are so many young (sub 25) drivers here with a TSX. I'm only (already) 23 myself.

And this is my first car, though I've driven my parents' cars plenty of times. Our whole house has been mainly Hondas. My dad uses a 2001 Accord which I have driven lots on.
I just love that car. Completely a driver's car. No ABS, no traction control, and uses hydraulic steering. It takes slightly more skill (imo) to pilot something like that in the winter compared to the newer equipped car.

And age or more precisely, circumstances and situations brought on by age, will for the most part dictate what cars are in the household. Of course, if you're wealthy, having an extra sports coupe in the garage isn't an issue...

I voted 25-29. I got my '09 TSX just before my 30th birthday, my first big ticket item, figured I was due turning 30 and all.

Prior to that I lived rather frugally, saving about 30% of my income each month. I'd created a rather sizable wishlist on Amazon. Then one morning, I woke up and looked in the mirror, and something just happened. I said to myself, "it wouldn't really hurt to buy every single item on my wishlist, would it?" and it started from there, culminating in the TSX.

Prior to the TSX, I had driven my then-gf's '05 Accord DX VP for a couple of years after moving in with her. I remember wanting a leather steering wheel. And before that, I'd been the primary driver of my family's 1998 Toyota Camry. While driving the Camry, I liked it and all, but looking back, I don't really look at it with fondness or nostalgia. Actually, I used to rather like Toyotas, but now I hate them. Must've been because my first collision ever, in the TSX, involved a Camry.

Looking back at the OP and the poll, I think I may have chosen the wrong choice. I believe that age does factor in. Off the top of my head, I used to really like the Celica and the IS300. When I see them on the road now, they don't really do anything for me.

The TSX will always hold a special place in my heart, being my first car, but who knows what will happen in the future? Definitely excited to find out...

i never liked the celica or any lexus for that matter. but i always loved the prelude and still do specially in the blue paint. never bought that car...but i will. the problem is im looking for one with low miles and mint condition and no mods...bone stock and ofc in blue. oh and obviously the sh version.

as to the answer for this thread, i bought my fav car in 2003 when i was 25 (3.2 TL). then i lost it for the car specially when the 3g came out. however now im back in love with it lol. then i bought the 135i and UM nothing comes close, that car is pure sex. i drive it everyday in country roads and twisties, even if i have no reason to leave the house, i will find one just to drive lol. i bought the rdx because i need a crossover, very happy with, it is about as 90% sporty as my beamer.

Yeah, I think I got the answer about the TSX having a special place in my heart, because I'm on my 2nd one now. The lease doesn't expire for 3 years, but I'm already thinking about driving it until the wheels fall off.

My S2000, which I bought at 25, is far and away my favorite car I've owned, but that should be obvious when you look at the other cars I've owned:

1990 Geo Prizm 5-sp (1998-2000) (HS)
1998 Honda Civic EX 5-so (2000-2004) (College)
2004 Acura TSX 5AT (2004-2007) (post-college)
2003 S2000 (2007- current)
2011 Acura TSX 5AT (2011 - ??)

I bought the S2000 when I was out of college, not married, and could afford to splurge a little on something silly. Fortunately I was able to pay it off AND KEEP IT instead of selling it due to kids or something. It is the car I wanted when I graduated high school and all through college.

Age is definitely a factor in cars. So is gender IMO...

My car list:

1995 Nissan Maxima SE (first car)
2003 Nissan Maxima SE
2006 Nissan 350Z
2009 Acura TSX
2001 Honda Prelude SH (current car)

Honestly, my favorite is probably my 1995 Maxima. As they say, you never forget your first. The car was built incredibly well for it's time. It had a fairly timeless design, and held up for many many miles.

I loved my '09 TSX, and probably will still continue regretting the fact that I sold it. That being said, I can't help but think of some of the corners Acura cut: cheap leather, sub-par steering, mediocre paint, etc.

My '01 Prelude SH is super fun to drive. Steering is built how driving should be. I love it, but it lacks modern-day technology.

At the end of the day it's a matter of cash on hand (or how much debt you're willing to take on) and personal preference. My 2cents...

The s2000 or miata is one of my next fun cars, once i have some more free time. Too busy with work to enjoy these cars now.

My close friend had 2001 prelude, 2004 s2000, 2002 evo and 2005 sti. He said the s200 was his favorite....but he now drives a COROLLA

I agree that the quailty of the paint is poor and the electronic steering is subpar for the tsx. Lacks feedback and feel.

In my situation, age did play a major factor.

My 2 favorite cars (although I'm 26, I've owned over 10 cars) are a 2005 S2000 and a 1998 BMW M3 (modded).

Being 19 with an M3 (although preowned) was awesome since due to my immaturity, I would push the limits of the car. I was never erratic like switching lanes through traffic, but I commonly topped out the car on the highway at nights, take turns WAY too fast and street race like an idiot.

It was my favorite because that was a time in my life where I felt invincible. Obviously, older and wiser now, I don't even go 10 mph over the limit but even today when I see an E36 M3, I can't help but smile.
