About to Purchase a 2010 TSX. Advice Needed.

Hello Everyone,

I've owned a couple of Hondas in the past and am about to purchase a 2010 TSX. It's the four-cylinder base model, which has an MSRP in our area (including destination fees) of $30,310. The dealer I am considering is offering the car to me for $27,130, which includes a $750 rebate from the manufacturer to the dealer. I also qualify for 1.9%/60-month financing. The price doesn't include registration or documentation fees, but do you think this is a reasonable start?

Please help.

I look forward to hanging with everyone.

Thanks.

I got my TSX at the end of the month for 29+k including ttl @ 0.9% for 60months (memorial day). I feel like your offer is good and reasonable.

That sounds pretty good. I paid 29.8 for a tech at the end of June. Don't just settle for that though: I also got mud flap, all weather mats, and wheel locks included. I had a quote from a different dealer and "padded" it a little..they were not making their numbers and needed the sale. Play hard ball and get as much as you can. I also purchased the 5 yr, 100K warrantly for $800. They quoted $1200 but wouldn't do it. I drive a lot of miles so I need the warranty.

i got mine back at the end of june 2010. base black tsx. 1.9% APR because i qualify for the recent graduate program. got it for 26,700 -> OTD was 30,073. the price included mud flaps, the trunk tray, and wheel locks. i should have asked for all weather maps. the price you got is reasonable but ask for the mats.

If you belong to Costco, you can check out the Costco no-hassle car price program. My dealer offered me $28,911 for a 2010 TSX tech with 5-speed automatic transmission, wheel locks, and silver steering wheel trim at the end of September 2010. I didn't check out the base price (non-tech).

Good luck with the negotiations.

Thanks, fellas.

Sounds like I'm at the right starting point. I'll see what else I can do. I already heard from the manager in a follow-up call that throwing in a free oil change would be no problem. The accessories you guys mentioned would be a nice touch too.

@adversary: Nice job on qualifying for the Grad Program through Acura. Though I earned my degree a long time ago and thus wouldn't qualify, I read about it last night on acura.com and thought that was a nice way for the company to tap into folks with potential, which may very well lead to increased brand loyalty.

Okay, now I'm getting psyched about this deal...crossing fingers...

@HouseApe - I most likely won't hold out for a 2011 model. It comes down to two things for me:

1) Pricing. I don't think I can get 1.9% for 60 months on a 2011 model, and the dealer's willing to discount deep on the 2010, it seems; and
2) The 2010 has all of the bells and whistles I'm looking just in the base model.

At this point, I feel like I have the upper hand, and I want to see if the dealer will talk past his sale...which can only further benefit me.

How soon are you looking to buy? I'll write up my entire experience as soon as I make a final decision. Until then, if anyone else has other helpful advice, I'd appreciate it.

@Stradivarius - Dude... to be honest Im a little bit nervous with dealing with the dealers... I have never bought a new car before and not too sure how deal with them....

I was thinking of buying a used 2007-2008 TSX but Im not sure if they are worth the $$....

On a separate note... just for my general knowledge... what kind of a credit score does one need to qualify for 1.9%? Any Idea?

Usually about 720 or above, I believe.

I just got 0.9% on my RDX. (Almost) Free money!

I wonder if the 2011 TSX sedans will have the same tail lights as the 2011 TSX wagon that's coming out in late November or early December - the lights are red, instead of the white/red/white configuration of the 2010 sedans. Check out the front grill and tail lights of the 2011 wagon as featured on the Acura website under future vehicles.

Personally I prefer the grill and tail lights of the 2010 model, but you should check out the differences yourself - again I haven't confirmed that the 2011 sedans will have the same front and rear treatments as the wagon (which also features some wood or faux wood interior trim around the shifter).

I agree that you'll be in a much stronger bargaining position with the 2010 models - my dealer had 35+ TSX tech and non-tech models on the lot to sell in September. Keep in mind that Acura sells roughly twice as many MDXs than TSXs. See the following press release from Acura.

OP, there are usually 2 prices that you should list or listen.
1. the vehicle itself price and
2. the OTD (out of the door) price, which include EVERYTHING

I don't know where you've lived and depends on which state which may or may not have sale tax.
$27,130 is what? vehicle itself?
Obviously, it's not the OTD since you said not include registration/documentation, which I think probably about $300 or less, but what about sale tax? No sale tax?

Since you didn't provide enough info, all I can say to help is: if you live in northern VA, the vehicle itself should be LESS THAN $26K and if you live in MA, it should be less than $27K. Period.

Thanks. I got them down to $26,811 for the vehicle price. Add onto it our state sales tax (I don't live in either MA or VT) and about $400 in documentation/registration fees, and my OTD price is at $29.2k. Included is a free oil change, which I am sure is pretty standard.

Just one oil change, and we would wait in the service waiting area. I was told that if I make an appointment, an oil change shouldn't last more than 30 minutes.

The one on route 50, close to the Dulles airport.
The price in late January was 27K OTD (during the mfg. rebate, which was probably $750 or so), there is no reason you cannot get it below 26.8K or even 26.5K now.

I guess my number above causes confusion.
Here it is
* In VA, the vehicle itself costs below $26K + 3.1% tax + doc/fee = $27K OTD
* In MA, the vehicle itself costs below $27K + 6.25% tax + doc/fee = $29K OTD

Hope that's clear

Hi there

I'm from NJ and also interested in purchasing an Acura TSX 2010 base model. I was quoted 25.6k for the car itself + dest. fees/docs/reg/taxes = 28.8k OTD price.

I would also qualify for the 0.9% finance rate offer for recent college grads . What do you think guys? Is this a good deal? Should I also ask for free wheel locks and mats?

Thanks in advanced!

I went through the used 2007-2008 vs. new 2010 debate back in May and decided to go for the used one, though new ones at the time were going in the $27K range I think? My used one was $20K.

I test drove a new one after test driving a used one and found that money aside, I preferred the used one. The new one is a pretty attractive value proposition though, especially for the guy who got a quote at $25,600- that's almost Accord-Camry-Altima territory!

I have another question for the people who have financed their cars through Acura. Did you apply online for credit pre-approval or everything was done at the dealership?

Thanks!

I've never really understood why the "out the door" price is included in these discussions. It seems to me that everything other than the actual purchase price varies so much by location that it only serves to muddy the waters. And by purchase price I mean what you pay the dealer (including any "giveaways"). The various state and local governments have so many different ways of picking our pockets, that it's just about impossible (and basically irrelevant) to fairly include what else has to paid in a purchase price comparison.

The other thing that seems to be lost in this discussion (and other similar recent threads) is the fact that any 010 bought now is already a year old. It may not quite seem that way now, but it will be readily apparent when anyone goes to sell their then 4 (model years) old car, 3 years from now. I don't care how long it takes for the 2011 models to arrive. In my opinion, I may have to pay more, but I'd get it back at the other end (and sorry, I'd also get the new, much less painful to look at, new grill).

I agree that the purchase price and not necessarily the OTD price is more relevant in these discussions, especially because of the varying sales tax rates.

On your other point about initial deal vs. resale value, I see what you're saying, but only if one intends to sell his/her car after a few years. There are those, I'm sure, who purchase cars and plan to drive them into the ground, however long that may take, at which point, the resale value becomes virtually irrelevant.

I have a question for thread starter. The price, $27,130, is that before taxes or after?

Edmunds, says, the invoice of a 2010 base TSX is $27,359. I'm assuming the price you listed is before taxes? Because their is no way a dealer will give you an OTD price below invoice. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm gonna answer your question based on my assumption of that being the price w/o tax. Even with tax on that price, you are getting a good deal.

Yes, this was definitely BEFORE taxes. Eventually, he agreed to a selling price of $27,000 before taxes & fees, plus a free oil change.
