Brought my TSX to get a trans fluid service and they told me the axle needed to be replaced. Feels fine to me but I haven’t seen it for myself yet. Anyway, they quoted me $4.4K for this. They can’t be serious, right?
How hard is this to replace? Was thinking about doing it myself if it is actually bad.
I've never owned a 2G TSX, but that sounds awfully steep to me. I had both axles replaced on my 3G TL-S because the the CV joints were "clicking' when pulling away from a stop with the wheels turned either left or right. I had them replaced about a year apart by a Honda mechanic who does work on the side with OEM parts. IIRC it cost me about 10-15% of what you have been quoted.
I had to have both axles replaced along with the intermediate shaft and I think it cost me about 3 grand, so while I think that quote is high I know labor prices have nearly tripled since then so it really doesn't surprise me. You can try to find some independent to do it, if that is a Honda/Acura dealer quote, but make sure they use OEM axles only. Any of the aftermarket stuff will shake and vibrate brand new out of the box, just at different speeds/loads.
