Aircon compessor clutch bearing. Had this happen to me
Bit of a job taking it of. Well circlip that holds bearing in place.

wonder if you guys can point me in the right direction.

so after working out i went to start my car but the first try, all it did was try and turn over. i stopped, took out the key and tried again. did the same, but left the key in. after a few seconds the engine started.

i tried to replicate it after with 10 or 11 tries, but can't seem to do it. you guys think it could be my starter? also it wasn't cold its like 50 degrees about right now.

My car sounds like it has a supercharger. After googling I've narrowed it down to the belt tensioner(V6 doesn't have a timing chain) or alternator. Turning on and off/ramping up the AC doesn't affect the sound. Here are some crappy videos that attempt to show it while accelerating. The area by the alternator has some vibrations which is why I'm thinking it may be that. I'm going to take it into the shop tomorrow or Wednesday. This is the first real thing to go wrong with my car so it's stressing me out a little bit.

Starter was engaging but the engine wouldn't fire?

From time to time I'll have something similar if I go to start it and turn the key but release it before the engine gets fully running and it stops. Subsequent key turns and the engine will crank but not fire; like a flooded engine or no spark. Eventually, after a couple seconds it fires and runs like normal but it seems like an excruciatingly long time.

Or another thought, won't the engine crank but not run if the RFID chip in the key isn't recognized? Is it possible your key is bad? Or the transmitter/receiver in the ignition cylinder?

I'm pretty sure that won't do it. All the battery does is power the button transmitter. The ignition interlock/security jobber is a passive RFID in the fob. There is an antenna coil in or near the ignition cylinder that inductively powers the chip in the fob.

It should still work even without a battery in the key fob. Like the valet key. Has no batteries - so I'm fairly certain that wouldn't be it.

If you can get it to do it fairly repeatably, you could try using the other key or the valet to see if it's a key problem or another thing problem.

A while back I remember reading about adding sport pedals to non-SE TSXs and most of the solutions seemed piecemeal. Some OEM covers, an aftermarket gas cover, modding Gen 1 dead pedals, etc. I don't recall seeing anyone explicitly mention the Spirior Honda Access parts. So I did:

Spirior Sport Pedals

Do you have an OBDII scanner so you can see if it's storing codes?

Alternator pulley.. don't stress. Take your belt off and feel all of your pulley's for wobble. That'll indicate which one it is. Most likely alternator, or idler pulley. It's not really a big deal

Hmm ok. I hope that's all it is. It's at the shop right now. I was scared the whole alternator was going bad and getting that replaced at retail prices + labor would be terrible. Alternatively me buying one online and waiting until next week to get it/install is also not a great option. If it's just a pulley then I can relax a little.

Yeah, generally those bearing go bad after some time. If they diagnose the problem, even replacing the alternator or alternator pulley is not too difficult. If you did your own suspension, then this fix should be be about 1/2 as difficult.

that's literally the same problem i had on my car when i had it. Could never figure it out and posted about it like 10 times.

Changed the whole alternator, tensioner and idler pulley and it never went away!

^^ yeah could be that too... although my compressor clutch only had about 1/3 of the total surface area being used when it went bad, and it still never made that noise.

I took my car to the shop this morning and they took a look at it and said it was my alternator. I said ok I'll buy my own and they said no problem it'll only be ~175 for us to install it (I was planning on just installing it myself but I asked anyway). Then when I went to pick it up wouldn't start and the alternator completely crapped out. Now I have to pay them $450 (for alt plus installation) because I can't drive it home. An $85 + a few hour job just turned into a $450 one. Fuck me.

If it makes you feel any better, I had the same thing happen to me with my AC pump, except my part cost about $650 + $250 in labor, and I had to wait a week for the part to arrive while I left it at the shop.

Also, I feel good about myself because I believed it was the alternator

Usually though they are still willing to let you buy the part elsewhere, and they will still do the labor for you. So if you haven't made the decision yet you can still go that route.

That sucks man, sorry that happened. We both got hosed.

I ended up buying the alternator from the O'Rileys across the street for just a few bucks cheaper. I would hate to leave my car at the shop for a week while I wait for the ebay one. Unless I knew it was being garaged every night, but I didn't want to have to deal with that. The shop better let me keep my old alternator because I can trade it in at O'Rileys for around $60 because of the scrap value.

Wait. If I'm reading it right, you bought the alternator across the street, a shop installed it, it took a shit immediately, and you're talking about taking it back for *scrap value*?

I'd take that thing back and either A) get my money back, or B) firmly lodge it up someone's rectum. It sounds like they sold you a defective part. Why would you not get your money back?

Call Paypal if necessary.

No no. My original one took the shit while they were diagnosing it today. Since I couldn't start my car to get it back to my house I opted for the shop to do it. They didn't care where I bought the new one from so I went across the street and bought a new one. I want to get my oem dead one for scrap since the auto parts stores add ~$60 to the price of the new one you buy a new one because of recycling bullshit. They refund you the $60 when you bring them your old dead one.

Ah! I get it. (iGetIt?)

Core charge.

I thought you, well you know what I thought because I wrote it out earlier.

Yeah. Sucks, but now you have a fresh alternator!

It's yours, you paid for it. You can request your old part back, no questions asked.

Probably not but I no longer need 4 doors and been looking at BRZs and S2000s. I found a BRZ with 30k miles for $20k so been interested in that.

That's tough. I'm a diehard Toyota guy so the BRZ seems like it would be an obvious choice...

But, I'd be highly considering the S2000.

Sounds like a fun predicament to be in though! Good luck.

speaking of BRZ (FRS) .. you guys see Toyota just axe'd Scion? Gen2 might no longer happen. Get your Toyabru twins before they're gone.

They're just peeling off the Scion badges and gluing on Toyota badges. The cars will still exist, just not the marque. This is a good thing. I don't think there is any change of plans for future releases (yet). We can still expect the V2 of the GT-86/BRZ/FRS/BBQ to be a bloated, CVT-only, non-boosted platform. Just like before.

EDIT: Not meaning that it was those things before, but that's how Toyota rolls with their "updates", is what I meant.

Dealing with people is fun!

I bet you would like to be able to reach through the monitor and dope slap people from time to time as well, huh?

Although, I recently sold something for $20 and the guy sent me $20.75 or something with a note of "...to cover the paypal fees..." which was very cool of him. Unnecessary, because I already, you know, accounted for how much it costs to "do business", but still cool.

Although, I recently sold something for $20 and the guy sent me $20.75 or something with a note of "...to cover the paypal fees..." which was very cool of him. Unnecessary, because I already, you know, accounted for how much it costs to "do business", but still cool.

i also have had nice people right here do the same with some very cheap items as they know after everything you net near nothing.

I have a paypal balance so they wouldnt charge me a fee for a gift from my balance

BUT ITS THE WAY THEY ASKED......and paypal is $0.35 PLUS 3% so its about 10 for a 310 purchase.
