I hate how dreams can completely change your mood. Yesterday was awesome and I was in a great mood all day. Then last night sucked and now today I feel weird.

Guys I'm finally going to achieve one of my goals since starting my grown up job. Free lunch all 5 days of this work week. I've gotten close before at 4 days in a row, but was let down on Friday. AND as a mega bonus, free dinner for the next four days and free breakfast Thurs and Fri. This is going to be an amazing week, I am going to eat so much food.

An MEP (mechanical/electrical/plumbing) consulting engineering firm. I'm mechanical so we specify HVAC equipment for Hospitals. A few hundred thousand dollars of equipment on most of our jobs. The reps make pretty good commission on us. Most are pretty cool and our firm has developed a really good relationship with a few main ones. Only a couple I've met out of like 50 have felt like used car salesmen.

Well today and tomorrow we are having lunch and learns. Don't know if you have them or not but its where venders come to the office and talk for an hour about their product over lunch. Sometimes they don't talk about specific products but more of a informative lecture over basic engineering. Those types you get professional development credits that you need later to get your PE. They are almost all worth going to. Then wed, thurs, fri, a new hire and I are going to a seminar class. They are going to teach us stuff about engineering and break down how their equipment works.

Hey Ryan, did you take the FE exam? I'm like one of only a handful of mechanical people that's Gunna take it. For some reason I feel like being a PE would be cooler than getting a masters. How exactly does it work when you pass the test? Cause the company I work for now has no PE's and I know that's a requirement to work under a PE for like 5 years or something.

Yeah, I took the FE. I just scraped by but that was kind of expected since the only studying I did was learn where the equations were in the equations book. I took it about 6 months after I graduated, since I missed the deadline when I was in school. My company paid for the test so it worked out.

When you pass the FE nothing happens really. I got to add E.I.T. to my title (Engineer In Training). Companies like to see that you have passed the test when you are applying for real jobs later on. The first firm that interviewed me said that they would start people who passes it at a slightly higher salary. I would take it while you’re in school so you have it on your resume, since it looks really good.

To become a PE you have to work under one for I believe 5 years before you can take the test. Working under one basically means just having one in your office to sign off on it. Internships don't count. It’s kind of expected for everyone in our office to take it once they have the experience. Two people at my office took it whenever it was a week or two ago and they said it was horrible. Once you become a PE you can sign and seal drawings making you responsible for those. I’m sure you also get a salary bump once you become one.

Yeah I knew the implications of PE. Didn't know the 2nd test was that hard. I thought it was more like engineering ethics more than problem solving. I thought that was the point of the FE. I plan to take my test exactly a year from now. Sign up this February. Take summer to study and hopefully pass the first time. My bro is a civ. eng and didn't pass his first time. Hopefully that won't happen to me. I didn't know companies would offer more for EIT. Just figured u would get the bump when you are a PE.

It might just be a firm by firm basis on how much they appreciate you have passed the FE. When I passed it, my firm just congratulated me on it and I didn't get anything special like a pay raise or bonus. But it for sure looks a lot better to them when hiring.

I like to explain the FE as just being a race against the clock to look up equations. There were some theory ones that I was able to do real quick and not have to look up. There were also a bunch of questions that were really odd and I really had no idea where to look them up. I feel like studying on your own for this test would be really difficult given how much material is covered on it. I read over the equation book a few times very in depth, and that’s all I did to study. Some problems I got almost instantly because I knew exactly where the equation was and just plug and chug. I hear the class offered for both the FE and PE are pretty helpful. They take a lot of time and money to do them but if you want to be prepared as much as possible they are worth it.
