Why separate wheels for snow tires?

Why would I get a separate set of wheels for my snow tires vs. simply having the snows mounted on my stock wheels? I understand if you live WAY up north where they salt the road mercilessly, to protect the wheels. But I've seen reference to a lot of people who buy a second set of nice wheels for there snow tires.
I just bought a set of Blizzak LM-22's for my wifes Jag S-type and had them mounted on the stock wheels. Am I missing something? I just can't see why I should fork over the extra $$$ for another set of wheels.

well some people like the look of a different set of wheels also then people don't have to pay to switch tires every season. this also lets people run a super sticky tire that performs great in the summer then have snow tires come winter. its all based on the user. also in the winter wheels take a beating from salt rocks hidden road dangers like potholes covered in snow and stuff so usually get a beating

i got snows b/c i drive in the white stuff b/c i have to. and my original tires did nothing for me.

I don't want snow tires year-round and worry that changing tires twice a year could damage the rims. Also, I can swap wheels at home, but have to rely on a shop to change tires. I use cheap wheels with snow tires for three months in the winter. On the other hand I don't like having to store a set of wheels and tires either.

most prefer a 2nd set of rims just for the ease of not having to bring the car in somewhere and heve the tires swapped off the rims. they can simply swap it them selves in their garage

I had a Nissan Maxima and I let the dealer/Firestone etc swap out the snow tires every year on the OEM rim. Since they have to rebalance the tires on the rim in the winter and spring, a dozen impact tool cycles and wheel clamps later and my rims were jacked up. They had to keep moving the wheel weights and that left marks, etc. If you like your OEM rims to stay nice, pony up for a second set of rims, which keeps all the remounting etc to a minimum.

I have a set of separate winter rims, but thats because they salt like crazy up here and I didnt wanna mess up my 19's. I unlike some people on here dont care at all what my beater rims look like, so I just bought steelies and dont even care enough to buy hubcaps.

If you trust the local garage and dont LOVE your stock wheels, then yeah its kind of pointless. My stock 03 wheels were fine after 2 full Michigan winters, you have to rinse em off every couple weeks to prevent any serious salt buildup.

wheel and tire wear and tear

i went with a separate wheel/tire setup for winter...

beyond the ease of swapping over, like others said, if you
don't have a separate set, your rims will get pretty scarred up over time
as tire and weights are ripped off in fall, new ones applied, ripped
off again in spring, new weights applied again.....etc, etc...

just a choice based on $$ and preferences
