Tire size & model question

I was able to squeeze out 45k miles(!) out of the OEM Michelins on my 2001 TL 3.2, and I'm at the point where I need to make a smart decision about getting new tires. I plan on keeping the car a good bit longer, and I'd like to keep the car as stock as possible. That said, my primary complaint with the Michelins pertains to the lack of handling and response. I'd prefer to purchase a tire that will offer some better handling in the curves, without compromising safety and overall wear/tear of the car.

That being said, here are my questions.

1. What would you all recommend on sizes other than the 205/60 OEM's? I'm pretty sure I have some options, but I'm not exactly clear on which ones would be appropriate and what the associated advantages and risks would be. While I certainly would appreciate a lower sidewall to get some better handling, I certainly don't want to be doing so if it means some compromise in safety, wear, etc. I can handle a small hit in MPG and tire longevity, so long as I can be assured that I won't have a problem with a larger size.

2. What brands/models would anyone here suggest? I've read lot's of opinions and commentary on the subject (including Tirerack.com), and it appears that the following would be fair choices:

a. Yoko Avid H4S/V4S
b. Michelin XGTH4/V4
c. ??

Obviously, I need a little help here, and I've love to hear some feedback from those of you who have already been through this. Again, my primary emphasis is to get some slightly better handling performance out of the vehicle without compromising stock look and safety/wear.

Many thanks!

You can increase the footprint by moving up to 225/55-16. This size will also mount on the stock wheels with no problems whatsoever.
How much are you willing to spend for tires? If you're not heavily budgeted, I'd suggest taking a look at the Toyo Proxes T1-S in 225/55-16. By far the best tire I rolled on.
I got a set for the TL close to 2-1/2 years ago - 30k miles later and they still look and handle great. At the rate of wear, another 10-15k can be squeezed out of the current set.

Interesting. I assume this means that I could move up to a 225/55 tire, regardless of brand, and not have any problems at all? My car is still under warranty until December 2004; would Acura be pissed with me? I had my tranny replaced earlier this year due to a warranty issue, and I certainly wouldn't want different sized tires to void that!

I checked out the Toyo's; a little too expensive for my taste. I'd prefer some lower-cost alternatives, however, I don't mind spending $500-$600 all-around.

Thanks again!

you should hit up www.tirerack.com and see what they have to offer in that suggested size. most should have customer reviews. i always start here since the site is easy to use and it has a good selection of brands and types.
