Rim Guards?

I've Heard my friend talking about installing rim guards on aftermarket rims to better protect them from bending/cracking and etc. Can someone go further on what is actually is? Where to purchase? If it will fit on my rims? and does it realli work? Will the look of the rims be diff? If anyone can please shed some light.. thnx.

a rim guard protects aluminum, chrome and painted rims/wheels during stud and nut removal. Also, some brands of tires have built-in rim protectors that are sometimes referred to as rim guards. Basically, it's just a recessed channel between the edge of the rim and the tire that creates sort of a "crumple zone" if you hit a curb or pothole.
