Powder coating TL-s wheels (opinions)

Got some curbage on my rear TL-s rims so I was thinking of either getting them powder coated, painted gunmetal, or chrome black. How do you guys think it would look in either of these styles on a Anthracite TL.

SAMKWS I have seen you TSX rims in gunmetal on your Anthracite, and they look hot!

Have not seen them on TL-s rims (powder coated, painted gunmetal or chrome black) If anyone has pic's please post.

How much would it cost to powder coat? I think that gunmetal would be nice.

Along the same lines. Was thinking of blasting down my stock TL wheels and hitting them w/ paint. Have a friend w/ a sand blaster and a booth in his garage. Do you folks think if have good primer and paint they would last or chip and look like $hit really quick?

I got a quote today for $210 four all four wheels any color. The guy told me I would have to have them stripped first of the factory clearcoat. Quote for stripping was between $15-30 per wheel.

Anyone care to do a photochop of black chrome TL-s wheels on a Anthracite TL? I think that's what I am leaning towards
I wonder if the guy I plan on giving my rims to can do the tiny outer lip of th TL-s wheels in plain chrome and the rest black chrome

Anyone have any input on whether or not I should even powdercoat my 99' stock 16" OEM rims? If so what color? I have a Tafetta White TL.. It's the 6 or 7 spoke rims.. I forgot

Powder coating advise..

I use to design hugh powder coating lines for all types of companies from Al extrusions, washers and dryers, wheel companies etc...) Powder coating is a heck more durable for technically it is a thermaplastic coating on the wheel. But the trick is that you must (I mean must) strip everything from the wheel before you coat the wheel or it will chip (for sure). If you plan to do this you must take everything off the wheel by cleanig the crap out of it by acid wash etc.. Than you will need to precoat it with a phourous coating (like a primer) and etch it with some DI water. Right after the Di water you must preheat the wheel for a little bit and then the powder is sprayed (make sure the wheel is GND'ed) and will adhear to the wheel. Right after it gets coated, it must be cured in a oven @350 for 30 minutes. This is the method the big wheels makers use. Mosst likely the guy you will use has a booth and not a hugh automated line but this should be fine.. Remember there are many different colors and glosses.

This is an old thread i know, but I just was wondering if you guys think i should paint my 18 inch 5 spokes? They are currently silver, I want to paint them gunmetal and leave the lip polished. My friend has experience in this area, I don't and I was wondering what you guys think. Thanks for any input.

any shop

The best thing to do is look in the yellow pages in your area.. All job shops should be the same and the process is easy, here are the things you need to know:

1. Make sure they clean the wheels so all dirt and grease are stripped. This is the most important part of the process. (Usually in a bath of some type of acid)

2. Make sure they pre coat it in a bath of phosphate. (this is lke a primer)

3. Make sure they have the color you want.

Its that simple..
