Here's a quick answer though you should try teh search function as I am sure this topic has been covered. Or at least check out some manufacturer websites to know exactly what the differnce betyween shocks springs and coilovers are.
Springs: Will lower you car, increase rise stiffness and you can use the stock shocks. You can just buy springs if you want. Check out comptech
Shocks or struts: Teh springs go over these, they are also called dampeners and they adjust hydrolically up and down druing the ride.
Coilovers: A setup of both shocks and springs which allow for greater customization of ride height and stiffness.

For suspension you have a few different options:
1) Coilover (Spring and Sleeve Type Setup) = Crap
2) Coilover Setup (Incl. Shocks and Springs) = Best Option
3) Springs Only = Good
The idea of coilovers is that you can adjust your ride height, but if you try and adjust your ride height with the first option with stock shocks you are going to blow your shocks. Yes you can slam your car but your shocks will be in a short time. A true coilover setup, i.e. Tein's, Apex'i, Tanabe, give you shocks and springs mated for each with ride height adjustability. Or you can choose springs that lower your car a set rate and you can buy aftermarket shocks or keep the stock ones. Your stock ones probably will last for a decent period of time assuming they are in good condition and don't have a lot of wear. But if they do, you just cut their life short.

Question: If you go for a coilover setup like Tein's...and the shocks dampeners need replacing, do you have to buy a whole new coilover unit? Or can you just replace the dampener?

i think the coilover setup is about 900. if you get springs and then get shocks seperatly your gonna be paying around the same amount if not more (H&R sports and koni yellows). i only got the springs, and now wish i got the coilovers.

I believe someone already answered my question in a previous post... Tein apparently allows you to refill the gas shock at a nominal cost...

don't think you would need that much since it's just for daily driving
try the Apexi or Tein Basic

Got the H&R Sports drop on Wednesday...
Still getting used to the ride... The handling is definitely improved...and in fact, it makes you realize how poor the stock tires are... The lowered suspension allows you to push the limits a bit more, and the tires are always giving out...
Again, I am still getting used to the harsher ride... Many report that there is almost no change...just a little bit harsher... But my opinion is that it is quite a bit harsher... I used to have an Integra with a very harsh ride (harsher than the TL H&R drop), and the car handled like a dream... But since this is a TL, and has an expectation of "luxury", it may be a tad too harsh...
The jury is still out for me... I am no stranger to harsh rides... I just need a little more time to feel things out...
But I must say... The OEM kit and the H&R drop combination is definitely an eye pleaser!!!
Plus, I get to update my sig

Ha Ha...Are you kidding me?!? If the company makes springs or coilovers they make a variant for the tl. Don't forget that 98-02 Accord suspension is the same thing so theres a ton more options there too. Not to flame Tein's by any means just letting you know there's a ton of other options out there. Im riding on a Hayame full coilover setup and I love it. Obviously not a stock ride but extremely smooth for how low my car is.
